DOWNLOAD EBOOKPhotogrammetry--the science of calculating 3D object coordinates from images--is a flexible and robust approach for measuring the static and dynamic characteristics of future ultra-lightweight and inflatable space structures (a.k.a., Gossamer structures), such as large membrane reflectors, solar sails, and thin-film solar arrays. Shape and dynamic measurements are required to validate new structural modeling techniques and corresponding analytical models for these unconventional systems. This paper summarizes experiences at NASA Langley Research Center over the past three years to develop or adapt photogrammetry methods for the specific problem of measuring Gossamer space structures. Turnkey industrial photogrammetry systems were not considered a cost-effective choice for this basic research effort because of their high purchase and maintenance costs. Instead, this research uses mainly off-the-shelf digital-camera and software technologies that are affordable to most organizations and provide acceptable accuracy. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe safety, maintenance and repair of bridges and buildings depend on effective inspection and monitoring techniques. These methods need to be able to identify problems often hidden within structures before they become serious. This important collection reviews key techniques and their applications to bridges, buildings and other civil structures. The first group of chapters reviews ways of testing corrosion in concrete components. Given their continuing importance and vulnerability to decay, the next series of chapters describes ways of testing wood components within civil structures. A final group of chapters looks at visual and acoustic techniques and their use to assess bridges in particular.Inspection and monitoring techniques for bridges and civil structures is an invaluable reference for civil engineers involved in safety inspection, maintenance and repair of bridges and civil structures. - Reviews key inspection and monitoring techniques and their applications to bridges, building and other civil structures - Edited by a leading authority in the field

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe pace of progress in gossamer technology has been strong since the publication of Gossamer Spacecraft: Membrane and Inflatable Structures Technology for Space Applications in 2001. Solar sails are an obvious and public evidence of this trend. But there have been many other advances as well in structures, materials, testing, and systems engineering. Recent Advances in Gossamer Spacecraft focuses on many of these, either as gossamer technology that was not sufficiently represented in the previous volume, or that has had significant growth and activity in the intervening years. The most accurate and up-to-date information has been assembled, reviewed, and presented by an outstanding group of experts.
