Jack Valentine and Phoebe Honeycutt hate each other on sight when they run into one another by accident on the vast Texas plain. To Jack, who fought for four years in the Union Army against the secessionist South, Phoebe is just another worthless, simpering southern belle. Phoebe, whose life in Atlanta was ravaged by the Union Army Jack so admires, considers Jack a particularly despiable member of a species she detests, yankees.
Young Phoebe can tell that something is happening at Gardiner Hall as she watches the commotion from the cottage she shares with her mom. She can see men working on the lawn-cleaning up the garden and cleaning up the house. It's almost as if someone is planning to move in to the long-empty estate, but that can't be. That would mean trouble for Phoebe. Phoebe and her mother moved to the cottage in the Cotswold Hills of England with the understanding that they might not stay long. The cottage, after all, is on the property of Gardiner Hall; if anyone moves into the hall, Phoebe and Mam have to leave. How surprising when it's old Mr. Gardiner himself who has hired men to clean up the place Soon, Gardiner moves in, along with his amnesiac son, his widowed daughter, and her blind son, Robbie. When Phoebe meets Robbie, she knows it means she may have to leave her happy cottage, but her mother brightens the day by gifting Phoebe with a beautiful and mysterious locket. What is the truth behind the locket, and who's hiding a big secret in Gardiner Hall?
The smell of cinnamon buns and apple pie remind widowed dad Chance Hawkins of the wife he lost five years ago. As does his sad-eyed little girl. So when his aunt hires a new pastry chef— whom she finds online—for their family-owned Texas café, the cowboy cook grumbles. What's more, fancy baker Phoebe Yates is boarding in their home. But soon enough, kind Phoebe is reminding Chance how nice it is to share a sweet roll with his daughter before school. And maybe opening his heart to becoming a groom again!
What happens when love can't lead to marriage? The last thing Phoebe Douglas ever expected when she came to the isolated dairy farm was that she'd learn to like it. Farms were dirty, and she wasn't the kind of woman who was interested in being messy. But before long, Mitch Hawkins, the strong, handsome dairy owner with a troubled past—and his family—taught her that some things were worth getting messy for.… Mitch always figured love and marriage went hand in hand. But that was before he met Phoebe. Sure, she wasn't the stuck-up city slicker he'd once thought she was. In fact, she was more than willing to stay and take on his problems—and his family's. But he knew he couldn't let her. Because he was the kind of man who'd do anything to protect the woman he loved, even if that meant not marrying her.
Phoebe's Perils is a suspense story about domestic violence filled with both fiction and nonfiction. This story reflects some of my own personal story as well as some of those who were in shelters and prisons with me. Names and some details have been changed to protect the innocent. Follow Phoebe as she decides how best to escape her abuser and find her freedom. Readers should be aware that the views of the abused and abuser are present. Some will come away from this book, saying it could never happen that way, while others will realize that the story's core meaning reflects their very own lives. Either way, this book will open up your eyes!
