DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is a rare multicultural perspective on disease, particularly cancer, in which the author takes on a journey through the medical establishments, cultural taboos, gender-tagged attitudes and personal stories of different civilisations. It could also be defined as a quest on how human logic relates to illness. The writing itself blends the diary, personal letters, poems and songs with excerpts from some of the foremost authorities in cancer research, producing an effect upon the reader akin to that which she experienced herself, as she moved back and forth between the emotional and physical shock of the cancer experience and the objective scientific data she uncovered. She begins to find cancer everywhere in her physical environment: friends, relatives and people she has never met -- some die. She finds a depth of friendship and support that she had never expected including that of her close companion. While writing her book she sent sections of it to friends, who commented on the text. These honest responses to her story add a further dimension. The structure and content of the book are informed by her deep commitment to women, men, ecology and peace issues. As part of the journey she reads many books on the environment and cancer. Although she lives in the USA and France, the book takes the reader on physical journeys to many other cities including Paris, Tunis and Beirut.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA central criticism emerging from Black and Creole thinkers is that mainstream, white dominated, culture, consumes sounds and images of Creole and Black people in music, theater, and the white press, while ignoring critiques of the white consumption of black culture. Ironically, critiques of whiteness are found not only in black literature and media, but also within the blues, jazz, and spirituals that whites listened to, loved, collected, and archived. This book argues that whiteness is not only a visual orientation; it is a way of hearing. Inspired by formulations of the race and whiteness in the existential writings of Frantz Fanon, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, W.E.B. Du Bois, Richard Wright, Lewis Gordon, Angela Davis, bell hooks and Sara Ahmed, T Storm Heter introduces the notion of the white sonic gaze. Through case studies and musical examples from the history of American jazz, the book builds a phenomenological archive to demonstrate the bad habits of ‘white listening’, drawing from black journalism, the autobiographies of Creole musicians, and the lyrics and sonic content of early jazz music emerging from New Orleans. Studying white listening orientations on the plantation, in vaudeville minstrel shows, and in cabarets, the book portrays six types of bad faith white listeners, including the white minstrel listener, the white savior listener, white hipster listener, and the white colorblind listener. Connecting critical race studies, music studies, philosophy of race and existentialism, this book is for students to learn how to critique the phenomenology of whiteness and practice decolonial listening.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKMeeting the in-laws was the least of her problems.… There's nothing like being the guest of honor at an engagement party to remind a person she has commitment issues, but Rachel Benjamin has finally put her neuroses behind her. A weekend with her fiancé, Peter, and his parents will put her skills to the test, but she's confident they'll never guess how new she is to normal relationships. Then Rachel receives a cryptic message: her friend Hilary is missing. Hilary was last seen in the company of Igor "Iggie" Behrenz, a budding Internet tycoon with strange fashion sense and even stranger secrets—secrets Hilary had been threatening to expose. Someone is orchestrating an elaborate scavenger hunt across San Francisco, dangling Hilary as the prize. Now Rachel has to track down her friend, which would be enough of a challenge if she weren't already busy proving how normal she is to her future in-laws. And when Rachel stumbles upon secrets all Peter's own, she wonders if maybe she's declared victory over her neuroses too soon.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKRising To Meet Our Transformation began as a few thoughts that mushroomed into many ideas that were in my poetic brain flow for quite awhile. Thus I began putting these thoughts into a wide array of poems on paper. Some of these poetic ideas the reader may closely relate to; yet other poetic words may still be more personal and private. As I wrote I allowed the flow of words and ideas to make their impact; then I changed and rearranged where the order and actual word composition required a better flow. Transformation was the key ingredient of this book and in many instances it will be just that. Nonetheless there are poetic thoughts that relate to a different type of change which may not be totally transforming, but at the same time be identifiable. My hope is that there will be a adequate array of poems that would spark the audience. Transformation requires a radical change in our thinking which translates into our personal life and living. Often we change to survive or become enamoured with a new idea that fills our void' so we change while our surroundings remain somewhat intact. Yet in real time our environment will recreate itself so we will eventually be transformed into a new age so let us begin! Bill Leahy December 2013
