In the mid-1870s, a violent spray of comets hits Earth, decimating cities, erasing shorelines, and changing the world’s climate forever. And just as Earth’s temperature dropped, so was civilization frozen in time. Instead of advancing technologically, humanity had to piece itself back together… In the twenty-first century, boats still run on steam, messages arrive by telegraph, and the British Empire, with its capital now in Delhi, controls much of the world. The other major world leader is the Czar of All the Russias. Everyone predicts an eventual, deadly showdown. But no one can predict the role that one man, Captain Athelstane King, reluctant spy and hero, will play…

Proceed to Peshawar is a story of adventure in the Hindu Kush Mountains and of a previously untold military and naval intelligence mission during World War II by two American officers along 800 miles of the Durand Line, the porous border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They passed through the tribal areas and the princely states of the North-West Frontier Province, and into Baluchistan. This appears to be the first time that any American officials were permitted to travel for any distance along either side of the Durand Line. Many British political and military officers believed that India would soon be free, and that the Great Game between Russia and Britain in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries would then come to an end. Some of them thought that the United States should, and would, assume Britain’s role in Central Asia, and they wanted to introduce America to this ancient contest.

An amazing story-even more so because it's all true. City-born and country-raised, Ken developed a need to fly and found a way to do it. While recalling his career as a USAF navigator, he relates to the history of the '60s, '70s and '80s-linking people, places, aircraft and adventures that circled the globe. In an early chapter, Ken describes in detail crossing the Atlantic, southern Europe and the Middle East to ferry a rare jet bomber to Peshawar, Pakistan. Later, the decorated aviator recollects a dangerous flight to the South Pacific, through a hurricane, becoming lost overwater with only a sextant to find a tiny island and procure the safety of his crew. After that, following three years in the C-130 aircraft in Europe, he transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II fighter for the rest of his career. He details missions and the use of smart weapons during his year in combat in Southeast Asia. During the '70s, he returned to Germany for six more years in the F-4, which involved sitting nuclear alert and training for all other missions.Twenty-one years in the USAF with more than 5,600 hours of flying provides for many intriguing war stories from the backseat....

Book 1 of this volume is an account of the archaeological and historical sites with which Peshawar is studied, including those of the Gandhara (Buddhist) period, and in particular, monuments of the Muslim, Sikh, and British times. This book was originally compiled to provide a connected and continuous, historical and archaeological account of these sites, many of which were not mentioned, or elaborated upon, in publications of the time, such as the Gazetteer of the Peshawar District, the voluminous Tarikh-i-Peshawar, and Annual Reports of the Archeological Survey of India. Book 2 is a collection of five different articles of historical and archaeological interest. The articles describe important royal documents of the Mughal period, and give a brief history of Peshawar.
