The extraordinary characters who lived at Perry Hall, Staffordshire, come alive in this profusely illustrated account of the Stamfords and the Goughs. Amongst others, we are told of : Sir WILLIAM STAMFORD -- an intellectually brilliant judge in Tudor Queen Mary's reign. YOUNG HARRY GOUGH -- who sailed to China at the age of eleven and went on to become a wealthy merchant and director of the East India Company. His sister married a governor of St. Helena; his little brothers were pages to Queen Anne. RICHARD GOUGH -- a prolific author and the pre-eminent antiquarian of the eighteenth century. JANE GOUGH -- a spirited young bride who kept a revealing diary. Squire JOHN GOUGH -- a surly character, often in conflict with neighbours and relatives, and litigious in the extreme. Mercilessly vilified as "a Wretch born in Despite of Nature fostered by the blackest Demons of Malignity, and permitted by Providence to exist as a Libel upon Mankind." One chapter forensically explores the origins of the Maryland Goughs, who purported a descent from the Staffordshire Goughs. The inescapable conclusion is that the founder of Perry Hall Mansion (and his father) deliberately deceived their contemporaries by avowing a much more distinguished ancestry than is revealed by the facts. A high-definition photographic supplement closes this book. It reproduces, with full commentary, the rare Edwardian postcards of the Perry Hall Estate published by Frank Nightingale, an outstanding local photographer. The 144 pages of this book are enlivened with paintings, engravings, lithographs, maps and photographs--many illustrations are in full colour. This particularly fine local history publication, fully referenced by the author and meticulously edited by Peter Allen, Chair of Barr & Aston Local History Society, also records the rise and fall of the grand Elizabethan mansion in which they lived and loved. The moat in Perry Hall Park, now a municipal leisure area, is almost all that remains of an extensive landed estate, whose distinguished occupants made their mark far and wide. The FOREWORD by Professor Tony Seaton signs off : "This is a beautifully designed book that I have much enjoyed reading. It is a labour of love by the author and his editor friend, both new to publishing, but clearly masters of the art."

The state of being called nostalgia has a history fraught with ambiguity and poetical connotation. In the late 17th century, nostalgic reminiscences were thought to be the symptoms of a deadly disease that shook one's mind and body. Today, we view nostalgia not as a medical condition, but as a bittersweet recollection of one's past joys and sorrows—the memories and treasures of an earlier self. And yet, there remains a category of individuals for whom such recollection can be seriously problematic: immigrants. In Yesterday's Self, Andreea Ritivoi explores the philosophical and historical dimensions of nostalgia in the lives of immigrants, forging a connection between current trends in the philosophy of identity and intercultural studies. The book considers such questions as, Does attachment to one's native culture preclude or merely influence adaptation into a new culture? Do we fashion our identity in interdependence with others, or do we shape it in a non-contingent frame? Is it possible to assimilate in an unfamiliar world without risking self-alienation? Ritivoi's response: nostalgia is both the poison and the cure in such situations. Documenting the tribulations of sojourners and immigrants, Yesterday's Self illustrates how and why the cultural adjustment of immigrants can only happen when personal identity is understood as a quest for continuity in one's life story, even alongside the most radical cultural rupture. Ultimately, reflection on the nostalgic experience reveals insights into the nature of the self and its dynamic engagement with otherness and difference.

In life, we all experience painful events. Hearts get broken, a friend lets us down, and the death of a loved one brings the desolation of grief. Sadly, some life journeys also include abuse, harm, betrayal or terrifying situations. How we cope afterwards depends on many factors, but trauma often creates an emotional wound. As time passes, some healing occurs naturally. Yet trauma often remains in the psyche for months, years or even decades. Carrying an emotional wound makes life more complicated. However, everyone can begin to feel better, lighter and happier. Healing starts with a deeper understanding of what happened, compassion, self-love and renewed self-esteem. Heal Yesterday’s Trauma dives into common areas of difficulties experienced in life. Each chapter explores how trauma hinders happiness and how to turn it around. Client stories—as well as those of the author’s—show how they released their pain. There are also exercises, tools and wisdom about becoming emotionally savvy, restoring boundaries and working with anger without exploding. The book includes a compassionate exploration of forgiveness and advice on how to heal a broken heart, as well as how to find peace after the death of a loved one. The book's theme is to help people re-find their inner happiness.
