Contributors to this volume present and discuss new data which suggest that major mental disorder substantially increases the risk of violent crime. These findings come at a crucial time, since those who suffer from mental disorders are increasingly living in the community, rather than in institutions. This volume is jointly written by four authors at the University of Utah with expertise in bioethics, health law, and infectious disease. The authors of this book set out a system of safety strategies and interventions for managing patient safety on a day-to-day basis and improving safety over the long term. There have been many advances in patient safety, but we now need a new and broader vision that encompasses care throughout the patient’s journey.
