The United States has publicly funded its human spaceflight program on a continuous basis for more than a half-century, through three wars and a half-dozen recessions, from the early Mercury and Gemini suborbital and Earth orbital missions, to the lunar landings, and thence to the first reusable winged crewed spaceplane that the United States operated for three decades. Today the United States is the major partner in a massive orbital facility - the International Space Station - that is becoming the focal point for the first tentative steps in commercial cargo and crewed orbital space flights. And yet, the long-term future of human spaceflight beyond this project is unclear. Pronouncements by multiple presidents of bold new ventures by Americans to the Moon, to Mars, and to an asteroid in its native orbit, have not been matched by the same commitment that accompanied President Kennedy\'s now fabled 1961 speech-namely, the substantial increase in NASA funding needed to make it happen. Are we still committed to advancing human spaceflight? What should a long-term goal be, and what does the United States need to do to achieve it? Pathways to Exploration explores the case for advancing this endeavor, drawing on the history of rationales for human spaceflight, examining the attitudes of stakeholders and the public, and carefully assessing the technical and fiscal realities. This report recommends maintaining the long-term focus on Mars as the horizon goal for human space exploration. With this goal in mind, the report considers funding levels necessary to maintain a robust tempo of execution, current research and exploration projects and the time/resources needed to continue them, and international cooperation that could contribute to the achievement of spaceflight to Mars. According to Pathways to Exploration, a successful U.S. program would require sustained national commitment and a budget that increases by more than the rate of inflation. In reviving a U.S. human exploration program capable of answering the enduring questions about humanity's destiny beyond our tiny blue planet, the nation will need to grapple with the attitudinal and fiscal realities of the nation today while staying true to a small but crucial set of fundamental principles for the conduct of exploration of the endless frontier. The recommendations of Pathways to Exploration provide a clear map toward a human spaceflight program that inspires students and citizens by furthering human exploration and discovery, while taking into account the long-term commitment necessary to achieve this goal.

High school students are more fully engaged in their education and postsecondary decision-making when they understand the "real life" connections between education and future careers. The Power and Promise of Pathways: How to Prepare All American Students for Career and Life Success, written by the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T) founder Hans Meeder, offers educators a comprehensive look at secondary pathways from the early planning stage to full implementation along with key issues relating to the transformation a pathways initiative brings to an entire community. Topics are presented with current research and best practice examples: Defining career and life readiness and why this is important. Developing a comprehensive pathways system that addresses six key components. Building a career development system that deeply impacts how students and their parents plan for postsecondary education and careers. Integrating college, career, and life readiness into exciting and engaging pathway programs that also address critical workforce needs and opportunities. Collaborating meaningfully with employer and community organizations in order to form mutually beneficial partnerships that offer opportunities for students to experience the world beyond school. Integrating dynamic teaching and learning approaches into pathway programs so that students also learn important life and employability skills.Hans Meeder is president of the National Center for College and Career Transitions, an organization that provides coaching and technical assistance for schools and communities involved in launching a college and career pathways system. Hans, former Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, is an internationally recognized speaker and author with expertise in pathways, school reform, career and technical education, and STEM education.

The steering committee was specifically asked to (1) provide an overview of the current state of astronomy and astrophysics science, and technology research in support of that science, with connections to other scientific areas where appropriate; (2) identify the most compelling science challenges and frontiers in astronomy and astrophysics, which shall motivate the committee’s strategy for the future; (3) develop a comprehensive research strategy to advance the frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics for the period 2022-2032 that will include identifying, recommending, and ranking the highest-priority research activities; (4) utilize and recommend decision rules, where appropriate, that can accommodate significant but reasonable deviations in the projected budget or changes in urgency precipitated by new discoveries or unanticipated competitive activities; (5) assess the state of the profession, including workforce and demographic issues in the field, identify areas of concern and importance to the community, and where possible, provide specific, actionable, and practical recommendations to the agencies and community to address these areas. This report proposes a broad, integrated plan for space- and ground-based astronomy and astrophysics for the decade 2023-2032. It also lays the foundations for further advances in the following decade.

The imaginative and effective activities in this book invite children to discover the sounds they can make with their voices. Not only are the activities fun, they also serve as excellent vocal warm-ups for singing. Children are taught that just as an athlete warms up various muscles before competing, singers must warm up their vocal muscles in order to be able to sing with flexibility. Young singers learn to understand the range of sounds their own voices can make, how they can more effectively control those sounds, and ultimately sing in tune and with feeling.
