Stories of Care: A Labour of Law is an interdisciplinary study of the interactions of law and labour that shape paid care work. Based on the experiences of homecare workers, this highly topical text unpicks doctrinal assumptions about class and gender to interrogate contemporary labour law. It demonstrates how the UK’s crisis in social care is connected to the gendered inadequacy of labour law and argues for transformative change to law at work. ‘Utterly compelling. Perhaps the best ever example in modern labour law scholarship of research-led recommendations.’ – Keith Ewing, Professor of Public Law, King’s College London ‘An important contribution to socio-legal research on care work and labour law.’ – Judy Fudge, Professor of Labour Law, University of Kent ‘Innovative and meticulous; merits a very wide readership.’ – Lizzie Barmes, Professor of Labour Law, Queen Mary University of London ‘A really important text which shows, through deep analysis of care workers’ stories, how badly undervalued their work is... It offers an excellent analysis.’ – Robin Allen QC, Cloisters Chambers ‘A rare and valuable insight into the lives and views of women who work in the little known world of homecare for rates of pay and conditions that shame our society.’ – David Brindle, Public Services Editor, The Guardian ‘Boundary-breaking ... an outstanding contribution to the growing field of feminist labour law scholarship.’ – Joanne Conaghan, Professor of Law, University of Bristol

2022 Catholic Media Association first place award in scripture: academic studies In this book, which covers all of Jesus’ parables, award-winning author Gerhard Lohfink takes a closer look at the origins of each one—its shape, its realistic details, but most of all its original message and the situation into which it was once spoken. Jesus’ parables speak in bold images of the kingdom of God, making it present to us as they reveal something of the mystery of his own person. Lohfink also offers a review of some of the scholarship in this area—as this topic has sustained research on Jesus since the first telling of these stories—but not for the purposes of debate. His reflections interpret the forty parables and show how they speak of the coming of the reign of God, lead us to Jesus, and reveal the mystery of Jesus himself.

"Parables of a Paramedic" is a memoir about the author's experience as a paramedic and what it taught him about life, death, God, faith, and spirituality. The book takes readers on an eye-opening journey through patient interactions on emergency scenes and critical care runs. The author shares what he learns from patients of the five major faiths: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and beyond. This is an unforgettable book that chronicles the pressing challenges we face such as disease, trauma, pathophysiology, aging, social ills, moral and ethical degradation, a broken health care system, neglect, and the unseen. Everything in this book is true and backed up by the author's notes that were kept in a journal for over three decades. Through this memoir, the author examines spirituality, religion, and the life-changing observations of being a paramedic. Will his own faith endure - and what can he learn from others? In this unforgettable book, the author not only learns more about his own faith, but he also is able to work with another person's faith during times of suffering and end-of-life care. The journey begins in the author's childhood home - his training ground to become a compassionate paramedic. He took care of his brother Doug, who has Cerebral Palsy. Providing care for his brother taught him so much about life, himself, and equipped him to take on the heaviness of being a paramedic. Readers will get insight into his training in Springfield, MA., along with his clinical time in New York City during his journey to become a paramedic. This is a profound examination of religion, spirituality, and the medical community's faith in science and technology. This book answers important questions - such as healthcare's role in working with and respecting each patient's religion and faith. The author explores treatments outside of standard medicine, such as holistic and spiritual treatments to support palliative care. Being a paramedic is a life-changing job, and "Parables of a Paramedic" shares an insightful glimpse into one man's unforgettable journey doing this significant work.

"Some sections of the Bible give us grand theology. Some move us to grateful responses to God. But the parables break through mere words and make us ask whether there has indeed been any real difference in our lives." In this beloved classic, James Boice takes us systematically through the parables of Jesus, grouping them into five categories: parables of the kingdom, salvation, wisdom and folly, the Christian life, and judgment. In each section Boice brings Jesus' words to bear on life today. Through his careful study and clear explanation of each parable—born from a sermon series he preached at the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where he pastored for 32 years—he helps us understand just what Jesus meant, and how our hearts and lives ought to respond. Jesus' parables are memorable for a reason. Discover their power for yourself.

The renowned biblical scholar, author of The Misunderstood Jew, and general editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament interweaves history and spiritual analysis to explore Jesus’ most popular teaching parables, exposing their misinterpretations and making them lively and relevant for modern readers. Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives. In this wise, entertaining, and educational book, Amy-Jill Levine offers a fresh, timely reinterpretation of Jesus’ narratives. In Short Stories by Jesus, she analyzes these “problems with parables,” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. Levine reveals the parables’ connections to first-century economic and agricultural life, social customs and morality, Jewish scriptures and Roman culture. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.

This book offers an original new conception of visual story telling, proposing that drawing, depictive drawing and narrative drawing are produced in an encompassing dialogic system of embodied social behavior. It refigures the existing descriptions of visual story-telling that pause with theorizations of perception and the articulation of form. The book identifies and examines key issues in the field, including: the relationships between vision, visualization and imagination; the theoretical remediation of linguistic and narratological concepts; the systematization of discourse; the production of the subject; idea and institution; and the significance of resources of the body in depiction, representation and narrative. It then tests this new conception in practice: two original visual demonstrations clarify the particular dialectic relationships between subjects and media, in an examination of drawing style and genre, social consensus and self-conscious constraint. The book’s originality derives from its clear articulation of a wide range of sources in proposing a conception of narrative drawing, and the extrapolation of this new conception in two new visual demonstrations.
