Not illustrated. 1922 Excerpt: ...but at present no one seems to know the symbolism. They say they have always used these forms. Similar designs are used in making their bead necklaces, in painting their cushmas, and in decorating their paddles, tobacco pipes, etc. The rough pottery is used for ordinary cooking purposes; the small bowls, for dipping food and drink from the larger pots; the larger bowls, for passing drink to guests; the larger jars with short necks, for carrying and storing water; and the largest of all are made primarily to hold the intoxicating drink used at the puberty ceremony for girls, and later used for storage purposes. The largest of these chicha jars so far reported is one in the University Museum, Philadelphia, collected by the author in 1914, which is four feet two inches across, and three feet high. Grammar. The plural is formed by adding ' bu ' to the singular: dog, otciti; dogs, otcitibu; parrot, wawa; parrots, wawabu. The masculine adds 'embu' to the singular or plural, and the feminine adds'aibu'; dog, otciti; dog, m., otcitembu; dog, /., otcitaibu.
