Black English dialect has long been rooted in the socio-historical experience of many African Americans. When discussing the most appropriate means of promoting the success of those who speak Black English, educators essentially focus on African American learners because the dialect is most commonly associated with this ethnic group. While some may emphasize the importance of recognizing and respecting dialect differences, others place emphasis on the stigma often associated with Black English usage in mainstream society. Regardless of how one characterizes Black English, it is a dialect on which many African American students rely during their daily interactions with mainstream speakers in society. Overcoming Language Barriers lays the foundation for readers who are genuinely concerned about understanding fundamental Black English concepts and promoting the success of those who speak the dialect. In this practical resource book, Dr. Jones “thinks outside the box” by including pertinent topics such as brain-based learning in addition to focusing on dialect differences. She shares insightful data from her English language arts research study as well as practical strategies to be utilized in mainstream classrooms. The study highlights examples of Black English features and feedback from English language arts teachers across the United States regarding their perceptions of Black English usage in their classrooms. This publication is ideal for both beginning and veteran educators and researchers seeking to effect meaningful change for linguistically different students.

Global migration continues to increase, and with it comes increasing linguistic diversity. This presents obvious challenges for both healthcare provider and patient, and the chapters in this volume represent a range of international perspectives on language barriers in health care. A variety of factors influence the best ways of approaching and overcoming these language barriers, including cultural, geographical, political and practical considerations, and as a result a range of approaches and solutions are suggested and discussed. The authors in this volume discuss a wide range of countries and languages, and cover issues that will be familiar to all healthcare practitioners, including the role of informal interpreters, interpreting in a clinical setting, bilingual healthcare practitioners and working with languages with comparatively small numbers of speakers.

Most of us desire to communicate effectively, but do not have a keen appreciation of the barriers to be faced. Because of these barriers, there is ample opportunity for something to go wrong in any communication. Competent managers develop an awareness of the barriers and learn to cope with them. How effectively do you, as a manager, communicate with your superiors, subordinates, and peers? Do you recognize the barriers to effective communication? Have you learned to cope with them? In the discussion that follows, the principal barriers to communicating effectively in today's working environment are identified, and proven techniques for coping with them are considered, The principal barriers to effective communication are: noise, poor feedback, selection of inappropriate media, a wrong mental attitude, insufficient or lack of attention to work selection, delay in message transmittal, physical separation of the sender and receiver, and lack of empathy or a good relationship between the sender and receiver. This guide examines each of these barriers and possible steps to overcome them. My name is Meir Liraz and I'm the author of this book. According to Dun & Bradstreet, 90% of all business failures analyzed can be traced to poor management. This is backed up by my own experience. In my 31 years as a business coach and consultant to businesses, I've seen practically dozens of business owners fail and go under -- not because they weren't talented or smart enough -- but because they were trying to re-invent the wheel rather than rely on proven, tested methods that work. And that is where this book can help, it will teach you how to avoid the common traps and mistakes and do everything right the first time.

Interpreter-mediated child interviews, by their nature, involve communication with vulnerable interviewees who need extra support for three main reasons: their age (under 18), their native language, and their procedural status (as vulnerable victims, witnesses, or suspects). The "CO-Minor-IN/QUEST" research project (JUST/2011/JPEN/AG/2961; January 2013-December 2014) studied the interactional dynamics of interpreter-mediated child interviews during the pre-trial phase of criminal proceedings. The project provides guidance in implementing the 2012/29/EU Directive establishing minimum standards on the rights, support, and protection of victims of crime. This book sets out the key findings from a survey conducted in the project partners' countries (Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK), targeting the different professional groups involved in child interviewing. Both the quantitative and qualitative analyses of the respondents' answers are discussed in detail. The book also provides hands-on chapters, addressing concrete cases of children involved in criminal procedures who required the assistance of an interpreter to ensure their rights were fully protected. Finally, a set of recommendations is offered to professionals working in this legal area. Subject: Criminal Law, Children's Law, Mediation]
