In the present paper it is proposed to discuss all of the Theropodous dinosaur specimens contained in the collections of the United States National Museum. The material at hand includes the remains of many individuals, several of which are represented by a considerable part of the skeleton, there are also quite a large number of separate bones.

The meat-eating dinosaurs, or Theropoda, include some of the fiercest predators that ever lived. Some of the group's members survive to this day—as birds. The theropod/bird connection has been explored in several recent works, but this book presents 17 papers on a variety of other topics. It is organized into three parts. Part I explores morphological details that are important for understanding theropod systematics. Part II focuses on specific regions of theropod anatomy and biomechanics. Part III examines various lines of evidence that reveal something about theropods as living creatures. The Ceratosauria is modified to include two super families with one new subfamily. Two new species of Ceratosaurus are described, the first based on an articulated skeleton from the Fruita Paleontological Area in western Colorado, and the second on skeletal elements of a single individual from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in east-central Utah. A number of additional specimens, identifiable only to genus, have been found in North America and are mentioned or briefly described. Specimens from East Africa and Switzerland are also considered to be identifiable only to genus. The peculiar genus Labrosaurus is placed in synonymy with Allosaurus.
