Dear Reader, If you have not read anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you read even one more sentence, you should know this: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted, but their lives, I am sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one may be the worst of them all.If you haven't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book will probably fill you with despair.I will continue to record these tragic tales, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yourself whether you can possibly endure this miserable story. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket

Ruby Pruett vividly recounts the compelling story of her life, focusing on her youth, and highlights later events. She commands readers’ attention and sympathy with her poignant narrative. A native Tennessean, she grew up during the Great Depression, enduring poverty and abuse from an alcoholic father and others in her large extended family. It was largely her godly mother’s love, teaching, and examples in word and deed that she commanded the strength to rise above her circumstances. At age five, Ruby became a constant and diligent worker and was soon a champion in the field and at home. She absorbed her mother’s advice to trust God, work hard, get an education, never accept charity, and “be somebody” (her mother’s exact words). These traits helped her to become self-sufficient at age thirteen. She garnered many honors during her life: class valedictorian, girl with the sweetest face in Tennessee, Miss Obion, state winner in Heritage Arts, county winner in dressmaking and in spelling, and winner of a national collegiate speaking contest. Belatedly, she earned an MA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and became a public speaker, teacher, and writer. She composed proprietary materials for BellSouth and served as a freelance reporter for the Birmingham News. Her articles have appeared in the Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, A Page in Time, and Christian Woman. Her triumphs over such odds are instructive and entertaining and should inspire all ages past childhood, particularly teenagers who deal with difficulties.

During one of his memorable speeches, President JFK declared, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." This speech marked the beginning of the Peace Corps program in the United States, which in turn led a young American to my small farming village of Agadji in Togo, West Africa. This young American sponsored me into the United States in June of 1989, a fulfillment in itself of my father's secretly held dream to see one of his children educated in an English-speaking Country, better yet in the United States of America. Education has always been very important to my father because he was denied that opportunity due to being an orphan at a very young age. He wished to attend school and become a lawyer or doctor, but instead, he was forced to become a farmer and eventually one of the best-known coffee growers in Togo. In June of 1999, I was able to invite my father to the United States for a year-long visit, during which I was able to enroll him in Kalamazoo Adult Education as another way to fulfill his dream of being a student. In October 2001, I invited my dear mother also to the United States for a year-long visit, giving both my wonderful parents a unique and unforgettable their FIRST plane ride experience. Travel along with me as I journey through a father and son's dream to a better tomorrow.

This book is especially perfect for mother/daughter reading groups. Molly Ayer has been in foster care since she was eight years old. So when Molly’s forced to help an a wealthy elderly woman clean out her attic for community service, Molly is wary. But from the moment they meet, Molly realizes that Vivian isn’t like any of the adults she’s encountered before. Vivian asks Molly questions about her life and actually listens to the answers. Soon Molly sees they have more in common than she thought. Vivian was once an orphan, too—an Irish immigrant to New York City who was put on a so-called "orphan train" to the Midwest with hundreds of other children—and she can understand, better than anyone else, the emotional binds that have been making Molly’s life so hard. Together, they not only clear boxes of past mementos from Vivian’s attic, but forge a path of friendship, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

"Mystical, magical, and wildly original...If Alice Hoffman and Sara Addison Allen had a witchy love child, she would be Paige Crutcher. Do not miss this beautifully realized debut!"--- JT Ellison, New York Times bestselling author of Her Dark Lies on The Orphan Witch. A deeper magic. A stronger curse. A family lost...and found. Persephone May has been alone her entire life. Abandoned as an infant and dragged through the foster care system, she wants nothing more than to belong somewhere. To someone. However, Persephone is as strange as she is lonely. Unexplainable things happen when she’s around—changes in weather, inanimate objects taking flight—and those who seek to bring her into their family quickly cast her out. To cope, she never gets attached, never makes friends. And she certainly never dates. Working odd jobs and always keeping her suitcases half-packed, Persephone is used to moving around, leaving one town for another when curiosity over her eccentric behavior inevitably draws unwanted attention. After an accidental and very public display of power, Persephone knows it’s time to move on once again. It’s lucky, then, when she receives an email from the one friend she’s managed to keep, inviting her to the elusive Wile Isle. The timing couldn’t be more perfect. However, upon arrival, Persephone quickly discovers that Wile is no ordinary island. In fact, it just might hold the very things she’s been searching for her entire life. Answers. Family. Home. And some things she did not want. Like 100-year-old curses and an even older family feud. With the clock running out, love might be the magic that saves them all.

"My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" Have you ever wondered where God is? How can this be happening? What did I do to deserve this? Have your circumstances led you to question your faith? Does God care? Does he even exist? Thoughts flooded my head from our traumatic failed adoption. “Lord, where were you this time? Is this how our seven-year-long journey to have children ends? Are we being punished? Are we cursed? This adoption seemed so right. I thought I was ready. I really thought I could help these kids. After all, I started life as an Orphan.” My core beliefs had been shaken. To make sense of what just happened, I went back and examined my own life. So many times, the odds were heavily stacked against me, life, and death situations. Yet, somehow, someway, God always showed up. From orphan to carpenter and beyond, the pages of this book are my life stories. But the book is not about me or my story. It’s about God’s. As you read these true stories of my life like parables, may they be a testament that God is present and active in your life, that he loves you and has a plan to give you hope and a future.
