A few years ago the public schools made no provision for the education of the blind, crippled, or mentally deficient, but now in New York City alone there are more than 100 classes for mentally peculiar children, while arrangements are rapidly making for the care of crippled and other classes of physically handicapped children. It was only as recently as 1909 that the first open-air school for tuberculous children was opened in Providence, but to-day such schools may be found in something over 40 cities. The special study of the mentally deficient child has engaged the attention of public-school educators for a period of less than three years, but at present plans are rapidly making in many progressive towns and cities for the careful study of such children by the employment of exact psychological methods. All these facts are interesting and significant, it must not be forgotten that no uniform methods of health organization in schools have been evolved, and that there still exist the most widely divergent beliefs and practices in this respect. Health work in schools needs standardization. The experiences of cities already organized in school health matters ought to be studied by other places attempting such organization for the first time. This bulletin discusses how organized health work in schools evolved. It contains the following parts: (1) Organization for Health Supervision; and (2) State Organization of School Hygiene in Minnesota. Appendix includes: Blanks and form for records, parents, notices, etc. A bibliography is included. Individual sections contain footnotes. [Best copy available has been provided.].

Excerpt from The American Journal of School Hygiene What was then true of schools is still to a very large extent true. Schools are notably institutions for giving a rather narrow type of intel lectual memoriter training. Their houses have been erected on small plots of land little larger than is needed for the buildings themselves, and have not taken into consideration the importance of play and outd001 physical education; they have provided one or more class rooms in a building with seats screwed to the floor and arranged for sedentary book reading; they have provided teachers who to a large extent are unlearned in the physiological aspects of children and of education. In many cases, as very recent school health surveys are appallingly illustrating, they have failed to provide in this library-school room even the first ele ments of adequate sanitation and hygiene. Excerpt from School Hygiene: Or the Laws of Health in Relation to School Life The importance of the subject here discussed must be evident to all who have bestowed even a cursory attention on the sub jcet of popular education. As a matter of fact, it has engaged the serious attention of School Boards and Committees, and been made the subject of repeated legislation by the Educa tion Department. The result of all this is seen in the improved character of the school-buildings which are everywhere being erected. In these, we find that greater attention is paid, not only to the space demanded for each pupil, to which a few years ago the official legislation was almost exclusively confined, but educationists have come to see that lighting, warming, ventila tion, and general sanitary conditions, are of prime importance in their bearing on the health and progress of the children gathered in these schools. Much still remains to be learnt in regard to these matters, and it is of the highest importance that school-managers and all who are concerned in the erection of school premises - or what is perhaps equally important, the modification of already existing schools - should be well acquainted with the principles which determine the sanitary condition of all school premises and arrangements. Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Excerpt from The Hygiene of Schools and Scholars, for Teachers and Parents IT has often struck me in the course of my duty as a Medical Officer of Health in town and country, how deep seated is the belief that the ills which sanitary Officers endeavour to remove are part of the dispensation of Providence. If we can teach the young that 90 per cent. Of the illness and trouble in this world is due to man's own fault, mostly carelessness and selfishness, we shall effect great progress in sanitary advance. There are doubtless many books similar in scope to this little handbook, but with such an inert resisting mass to overcome, the teaching herein set forth can hardly be overdone.
