Excerpt from Ohio Rural Life Survey: Southeastern Ohio Before we proceed, just a word as to the method followed in the field investigations. The township was made the unit of study, and was called a community. An investigator would spend about a week in each township or community, asking specified questions of the leaders of its religious, educational, social and political institutions, and making house to house visits in certain sections. The written record of these interviews were made on uniform blanks, and, to gether with the investigator's personal observations; formed the basis for his report upon the conditions existing in the community. For the intensive study of the farmer's income, questions furnished by the United States Department of Agriculture were used. The investi gators were carefully selected, being either young men of college training or adults of seasoned judgment.
