Our office is in business for the purpose of assisting the tree and plant grower in every way possible, not only to get the best results for the present time, but to keep his, and his neighbors' trees in such condition that the future results will be, at least, equally gratifying, and if possible to better the conditions year by year. In this work we have endeavored to meet the need for a collection of useful information along the line of our work, which can be placed in our growers' hands, and which will, in condensed form, give information helpful in almost any problem likely to come to him in his ordinary experience. We do not intend, in any respect, to compete with the very excellent literature issued from our State Agricultural Experiment Station, but to condense and combine the information, in most cases obtained from these bulletins, for more convenient reference in any emergency. Excerpt from Horticulture for Schools This book is intended as a text-book of horticulture for high-schools and for other schools requiring a text for pupils of high-school grade, and also for use in homes and reading courses. The subject-matter and exercises may be covered in one school year if three periods a week are spent in recitation and two double periods are employed for laboratory work. When a shorter period is given to the subject, it will be advisable to omit the chapters of least importance to the community. It is not necessary that the chapters be studied in the order given in the text. The teacher should assign them in the order suggested by the climate, season, and needs Of the locality. Excerpt from The Handbook of Horticulture and Viticulture of Western Australia As it is a physical impossibility for the Viticultural and Horticultural Expert of the Bureau to be in all places at all times, and as the demands for Mr. Despeissis' advice have been so great, the Bureau of Agriculture considered it advisable to have Mr. Despeissis' views on cultural matters embodied in book form. Before commencing the Handbook of Horticulture and Viticulture of Western Australia, which is now presented to the reader, Mr. Despeissis visited all the districts in the South-Western Land Division of the Colony, so "he knows whereof he speaks." Neither the Bureau of Agriculture nor Mr. Despeissis have spared pains or expense to make the Handbook as complete as the somewhat limited time at the authors' disposal would permit. It was hoped that the Handbook would have been issued before the present planting season, but the work insensibly outgrew its originally prescribed limits. The Handbook has been written as much for the new-comer as those already settled upon the soil, and for this reason chapters on the preliminary preparation of the land have been included. Errors, almost inseparable from the somewhat hurried preparation of a book requiring a vast amount of thought and research, may be discovered in these pages, but it is to be hoped they will be immeasurably counterbalanced by the mass of valuable information the Handbook contains. In conclusion, the Bureau of Agriculture would take this opportunity of acknowledging the kind assistance received from the Hon. the Minister of Agriculture of New South Wales, the proprietors of the "Australian Agriculturist," Messrs.
