From Paleolithic flax to 3D knitting, explore the global history of textiles and the world they weave together in this enthralling and educational guide. The story of humanity is the story of textiles -- as old as civilization itself. Since the first thread was spun, the need for textiles has driven technology, business, politics, and culture. In The Fabric of Civilization, Virginia Postrel synthesizes groundbreaking research from archaeology, economics, and science to reveal a surprising history. From Minoans exporting wool colored with precious purple dye to Egypt, to Romans arrayed in costly Chinese silk, the cloth trade paved the crossroads of the ancient world. Textiles funded the Renaissance and the Mughal Empire; they gave us banks and bookkeeping, Michelangelo's David and the Taj Mahal. The cloth business spread the alphabet and arithmetic, propelled chemical research, and taught people to think in binary code. Assiduously researched and deftly narrated, The Fabric of Civilization tells the story of the world's most influential commodity.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X. ODDS AND ENDS. 149. Odds and Ends.--The scope of the foregoing chapters has compelled us to leave unmentioned certain matters relating to clothing that have, nevertheless, a considerable importance. And the size of this volume does not permit us to add further chapters. We have, therefore, assembled here certain odds and ends of information or advice for clothing under special circumstances, as bed-clothes, the laying-by of clothes for winter and summer, and other details. They have no more connection one with the other than odds and ends usually have. Our idea is that they may have some connection with the various and varied wants of our readers. 150. Bed-clothing.--Too little attention is paid to bed-clothing. One-third of life is, or should be, spent in bed, and if the immediate surroundings of the body influence health during the day, they are likely to exercise greater, rather than less, influence during the night. For at no other time are we unconscious, unable to rectify anything that may be wrong, and at no other time do we pass so many consecutive hours in the same place, under the same conditions. Bed-clothing should be warm but light, and should not retain the perspiration. Many of the more expensive kinds of white cotton counterpanes, so much in use, have the reverse of these qualities; and it is a good plan to turn them back from the bed and to replace them by blankets or quilts. For an invalid or bedridden person they should never be used. Some folks accustom themselves to sleep under heavy clothing. Anecdotes are related of travellers who are unable to sleep under a French duvet unless weighted by the superposition of an open portmanteau, and of agricultural poor who, in default of warmer covering, place a...

Excerpt from From Wool to Cloth One hundred and fifty years ago, in the days of homespun, when spinning and weaving were a prominent part of each household's duties, the value of quality of cloth was a matter of common knowledge. Familiarity with the process of making fabrics brought a general acquaintance with cloth, that does not now exist. Many persons today do not know the difference between worsteds and woolens - many more cannot distinguish between those of a good and those of an inferior grade. This ignorance of quality is not to be wondered at when we consider that what was once a part of household work has become a great national industry. The inability to judge cloth is a matter not only detrimental to the interests of the consumer, but also to those of the manufacturer.
