Examining carefully the Egyptian epic hexameter production from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AD, especially that of the southern region (Thebaid), this study provides an image of three centuries in the history of the Graeco-Egyptian literature, in which authors and poetry are related directly to the social-economic, cultural and literary contexts from which they come. The training they could get and the books and authors they came in touch with explain that we know so many names and works, written in a language and metrics that enjoyed the greatest esteem, being considered proofs of the highest culture. Laura Miguélez Cavero demonstrates that the traditional image of a “school of Nonnos” is not justified ‐ rather, Triphiodorus, Nonnus, Musaeus, Colluthus, Cyrus of Panopolis and Christodorus of Coptos are just the tip of a literary iceberg we know only to some extent through the texts that papyri offer us.
In classical times, the story of the Trojan War was told in a series of eight epic poems known as the Epic Cycle, of which only the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer survive to the present day. The final poem in the sequence was Eugammon of Cyrene's Telegony-an obscure, largely forgotten post-script to the Odyssey, which told of the hero's adventures in the years after his return to Ithaca, and his eventual death at the hands of Telegonus, his eponymous son by the goddess Circe. The Telegony is now lost, but fragments of Odysseus' post-Homeric life are preserved in the works of later authors. Following on from his 2017 reconstruction of the Cypria, editor D. M. Smith provides an exhaustive compilation of these many and varied sources, illustrating how Eugammon's poem was just one of several competing traditions concerning Odysseus' eventual fate. Included are excerpts from Apollodorus' Bibliotheca, Hyginus' Fabulae, Parthenius' Erotica Pathemata, and the fictional Trojan War diary of Dictys Cretensis, as well as the writings of Oppian, Plutarch, Servius, and the second-century geographer Pausanias. Smith also presents two medieval interpretations of the Telegonus story by the Middle English poets John Gower and John Lydgate. The Telegony may be gone forever, but in its absence, this comprehensive anthology will at least shed some light on what became of the wily son of Laertes after Homer left off.
The Renewal of Epic considers various modes of allusion to Homer in the Argonautica of Apollonius, dealing not only with similarities in phraseology but also with thematic and structural resemblances. After an introduction, two chapters discuss Apollonian techniques in treating repeated Homeric scenes: sacrifice, shipwreck, boxing and battle. The central section of the work considers the multiple links between the adventures of the Argonauts and Odysseus' wanderings. A final chapter explores Apollonius' innovative treatment of the divine, both generally and in particular scenes. The work shows convincingly that the Argonautica reproduces many of the patterns which have been found in the Iliad and Odyssey. It demonstrates the presence of allusion at every level in the poem, linking it to its predecesors and acting as an essential interpretative aid to the reader.
