Anthraquinone is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of dyes & pigments, an additive in the kraft pulping process in the paper industry, a catalyst in the isomerization of vegetable oils, an accelerator in nickel electroplating, & as a bird repellent. The Nat. Toxicology Program (NTP) studied anthraquinone to determine if it caused cancer in rats or mice. They conclude that anthraquinone caused cancer of the kidney & urinary bladder in male & female rats & of the liver in female rates. The occurrence of some liver tumors in male rats may have been related to anthraquinone exposure. The NTP concludes that anthraquinone caused liver cancer in male & female mice, & thyroid gland tumors in mice may have been related to anthraquinone. Illus.

a-Methylstyrene is used to make heat-resistant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins & polymers. This report studies the effects of a-methylstyrene on male & female rats & mice to identify potential toxic or cancer-related hazards. It concludes that exposure to a-methylstyrene in the air caused kidney tumors, & possibly mononuclear cell leukemia, in male rats. It concludes that a-methylstyrene caused liver cancer in female mice, & also possibly in male mice. Charts, tables, graphs & plates.
