The North American AJ "Savage" came into being as a direct result of the greatest Navy and Government controversy since Billy Mitchell and the Battleships. This controversy was over the future Nuclear strike capabilities of the Navy, if any.
During the first three days of the Japanese assault on American Pacific bases in December of 1941, the 24th Pursuit Group, the only unit of interceptor aircraft in the Philippine Islands, was almost destroyed as an effective force. Yet the group's pilot, doomed from the start by their limited training, an inadequate air warning system, and lack of familiarity with the few flyable pursuit aircraft they had left, fought on against immensely superior numbers of Japanese army and navy fighters.
This is aircraft was to replace the AJ-1/2 and the A3D as a nuclear attack bomber. This twin engine bomber carried the Linear Bomb (nuclear weapon) was carried between the two J78-GE-8. It was also used as a tanker, a Photo Recon and ECM. This was the second heaviest aircraft excepted by the Navy the first being the A-3. The first prototype flew August 31, 1958 and deliveries started in 1960 to VAH-7. The new USS Enterprise was the first ship to deploy the A-5.
The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed.The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.
North American's oft-forgotten F-107A remains perhaps the most enigmatic of the famous early "Century Series" fighters. The enigma stems from the fact that it was an outstanding and extraordinarily effective war-plane and was, perhaps, the best airplane in the world for its particular job at the time of its late 1956 first flight; mysteriously, it was never to go into production, even in light of its superior capabilities. The F-107A scored several firsts. Among them were a truly unique flight control system, an advanced inlet system, and the incorporation of a semi-submerged store. It was also the last of a long line of North American fighters to be built.
