Traditionally, in British society, the milkman has been a family friend, a sex symbol and a cheerful chappie. He has been the eyes and ears of the community, and his genetic legacy has supposedly passed into the lineage of housewives. This collection of folk tales about milkmen covers the history of the job and the milkman's everyday experience. The book is structured by the milkman's working day. It starts with the alarm-clock and ends with the milkman returning home in search of sustenance and tender loving care. The book is less about changes in the dairy industry and more about the work experiences of the people who have delivered milk. Many milkmen are featured: Chris Frankland delivered over eight million pints before he retired at seventy-four; Alistair Maclean drove two million miles across the north coast of Scotland in fifty years; and Tony Fowler, an award-winning Leicestershire milkman, helped to put over fifty people in prison. For more than thirty years the author has collected milkman stories through oral testimony, newspaper archives, anecdotes, diaries, books and more formal interviews.

The early nineteenth century witnessed the mass movement of people from Britain’s countryside into its burgeoning towns and cities; people came to the city in search of work. This prompted many dairy farmers to follow suit and move themselves, their family and their cows into the country’s growing metropolises, where they opened the first generation of city dairies. In the 1830s, transportation in Britain was revolutionized by the coming of the railways, enabling foodstuffs, including milk, to be transported in bulk from countryside to city. Large dairy companies took advantage of this opportunity, opening a new generation of retail dairies. The demand for milk was so great that some cities boasted a dairy at the end of every street. For the next hundred years the cowkeepers fought a rear-guard action against the mighty corporate dairies and their attempts to monopolize the liquid milk market. The cowkeepers continued to produce their own milk, selling it — ‘fresh from the cow’ — over the dairy counter and out on the milk round. These dairies were kept in the family, handed down through successive generations. Despite surviving two World Wars, the rapid technological, social and economic changes that followed, brought about the demise of the traditional cowkeeper. But the city dairy continued as a family business, working as part of a national distribution network, overseen by the Milk Marketing Board. Out on the round, the family dairyman was almost indistinguishable from the corporate milkman. The sixties and seventies saw the arrival of the Supermarket, a game-changer in retailing. To survive, the city dairy had to change once more. It expanded its offer and seamlessly joined the ranks of those other most British of institutions: the Corner Shop and the Convenience Store.

Formal ADLs offer great potential to analyse the architecture of a system, predict the overall performance by using simulations, and allow to automatically generate parts of the implementation. Nevertheless, ADLs are rather not used in industrial practice since several problems hinder to exploit their potential to the full extend. This thesis elaborates the design of an ADL that copes with these impediments of ADLs in practice. Therefore, the design of a lightweight ADL is derived which also provides well defined extension points to be adapted to a certain domain or development process. Furthermore, it is investigated how architectural modeling can be enriched with agile development methods to support incremental modeling and the validation of system architectures. Therefore, a set detailed of requirements for architectural modeling and the simulation of system architectures is defined and MontiArc, a concrete ADL to model logical architectures of distributed, interactive systems, is derived. The language is based on the mathematical FOCUS [BS01] framework, which allows to simulate modeled systems in an event-based style. Code generators and a simulation framework provide means to continuously refine and test architectural models. To add new features or adapt the language to a new domain, a corresponding language extension method is presented to extend the syntax, language processing tools, and code generators of the ADL. A lightweight model library concept is presented which allows to develop and reuse component models and their implementation in a controlled and transparent way. The developed language, the simulator, and the language extension techniques have been examined in several case studies which either used or extended MontiArc.
