Generations of Basques in New York have vibrantly exercised their culture, language, values, and traditions, transmitting to their children a robust sense of ethnic identity. In today's world of globalization it is often assumed that particular communities are disappearing as a consequence of the factors of homogenization. However, the Basques have proved this false. Depicting Basque mutual aid societies, language courses, musical and dance troupes, cuisine classes, community activities, sport, political involvement, and ties to homeland institutions are just a few of the ingredients which mix to compose the chapters of this work. Readers will learn about the history and reasons why Basques left the Pyrenees of northern Spain and southern France from the personal experiences of political and economic exiles' oral histories. Original archival research allows us to discover the features of the early 1900s Centro Vasco-Americano, the Basque Government-in-exile Delegation in New York, and the development of Basque organizations. "Basqueness" is being redefined in this transnational cosmopolitan community, and with the pioneer spirit of their ancestors, latter generation Basques are nurturing and promoting Basque culture and identity to the world.

A reclusive designer living in a custom tiny house in the middle of the Montana wilderness. A couple who traded their expensive Bay Area apartment for a slip at a nearby marina, where they live on a docked sailboat. A family of five who decided to simplify their lives by moving into a school bus, selling most of their possessions in the process. Nomad features their stories, and many more. From vanlifers to boondockers, liveaboards to tiny-house dwellers, these freedom seekers have forged a new way of life for themselves—one that values experiences over things, is environmentally conscious, and is often more budget-friendly than their “rooted” lives ever were. The ubiquity of the internet has ushered in a new era of connectivity that makes working from an Airstream beside a roaring river or running a photography business from a mountaintop a reality. It’s now possible to do whatever you want from wherever you want and still have a foothold in the world. This book shows you how, with tours of 26 unconventional homes and the people who live in them, plus all the information you need to make your own off-the-grid dream a reality. There are chapters on bathroom and storage—two of the most challenging aspects of this lifestyle—plus a comprehensive guide to finding the right home, assessing the cost of renovation, handy products for small spaces, and indispensable resources (including sources for replacement RV parts, portable power solutions, tiny wood stoves, and much more).

Personal in approach, beautiful in design, global in scope, The Peripatetic Pursuit of Parkinson Disease envisions a better world for people with Parkinson disease (PD). Developed by the Parkinsons Creative Collective (all of whom have PD), it is an anthology of the experiences of over 120 experts at living with PD -- the patients themselves. Join them on a journey from diagnosis, to informed patient, to empowered advocate. Filled with information and inspiration, it's a color-illustrated encyclopedia of PD from the patients' point of view. With nearly one quarter of the voices from around the world, it encourages discussion while it speaks to those newly diagnosed as well as to those who have lived with PD for years. Even medical professionals reading the book have found new perspectives on what it is like to live with PD. It delivers much more than the basics about this chronic, progressive, neurological disease. The authors share their stories and strategies on how to improve health, quality of life, and wellness in spite of PD. They also present opinions on how to speed the development of new treatments and how to face other life challenges that come with PD. --For those with PD, it's a support group between two covers; and for everyone else, it's a window into the world of PD.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL MIND, Jeffry A. Timmons, Harvard Business School "A well-written & practical book designed to aid persons contemplating an entrepreneurial venture. Timmons, a specialist in entrepreneurship, has done an excellent job covering the field. Starting with a broad overview of what entrepreneurship is, he concludes with an assessment aimed at summing up the strengths & weaknesses of a new enterprise in advance. In between, he provides sound advice on necessary managerial skills; how to form, build, & reward a new venture team; planning & goal-setting; & the pros & cons of family businesses. Particular attention is also given to the need for ethical standards. Recommended." -- Library Journal. "A close look at the psychology of the entrepreneur & how that type of personality reacts with people & the world at large. Timmons does a good job of exploding myths & misconceptions, offering a wealth of insight into success, failure, & the hard work it takes to succeed in starting up a business or taking over the reins of an established or family-owned enterprise. The pitfalls of entrepreneurial life are analyzed, but more importantly, the positive attributes of the entrepreneur are emphasized. Numerous real-life case studies supplement the coverage." -- Booklist.
