Aristotle's moral and political thought formed the backbone of education in practical philosophy for centuries during the classical and medieval periods. It has often been presumed, however, that with the advent of the Protestant Reformation, this tradition was broken. This book is the first extensive study of ideas on earthquakes before the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The earthquake had a deep impact on European culture, and the reactions to it stood in a long tradition that, before this study, had yet to be explored in detail. Thinking on Earthquakes investigates both scholarly theories and views that were propagated among the early modern European population. Through a chronological approach, Vermij reveals that in contrast to the Ancient and medieval philosophers who suggested rational explanations for earthquakes, supernatural ideas made a powerful comeback in the sixteenth century. By analysing a variety of sources such as pamphlets, sermons, and treatises, this study shows how changes in the ideas on earthquakes were a result of social and political demands as well as from improvements in the means of communication, rather than from scientific methods. Thus, Vermij presents an illuminating case for the production of knowledge in early modern Europe. A range of events are explored, including the Ferrara earthquake in 1570 and the Vienna earthquake in 1590, making this study an invaluable source for students and scholars of the history of science and the history of ideas in early modern Europe.
Sergiej S. Slavinski presents the first major study of Francis Cheynell's 1650 treatise on the doctrine of the Trinity. Situating Cheynell in his historical context, Slavinski examines Cheynell's role in the Trinitarian controversies of the Civil War and Interregnum England. The book demonstrates the interplay between polemic and piety in a work of Reformed scholasticism, showcasing how Cheynell’s eclectic theological method in reading Scripture reinforced his conviction of the Trinitarian persons as one true God. Slavinski argues that Cheynell’s polemical-practical Trinitarianism has the idea of Trinitarian oneness as infinite simplicity at its core.

Der fruhneuzeitliche Aristotelismus kann als eine dynamische Wissenstradition beschrieben werden, die durch institutionelle und intellektuelle Neukontextualisierungen, durch Tradierung und Transfer standig umgestaltet und transformiert wird, gleichzeitig sich aber weiterhin als ein Wissen versteht, das sich im Wesentlichen aus dem Kanon des aristotelischen Corpus ableitet. Im Mittelpunkt des Sammelbandes steht das Verhaltnis dieses fruhneuzeitlichen Aristotelismus zum neuen, aus Beobachtung und Experiment abgeleiteten Wissen von der Natur, wie es in dem Zeitraum von ca. 1550 bis 1650 in den diesen einzudringen und ihn zu verandern beginnt. Dieses neue Wissen von der Natur umfasst gleichermassen Astrologie, Astronomie, Medizin, Psychologie, (Al-)Chemie, Physik und Biologie, aber auch die Methodologie, das heisst die Logik, Argumentations- und Wissenschaftstheorie in ihrer Anwendung auf das naturphilosophische Wissen. Der Aristotelismus erweist sich dabei keinesfalls als normiertes und unbewegliches System, sondern reagiert etwa auf die Herausforderungen des Paracelsismus oder spater des Cartesianismus, genauso wie er auch schon auf die methodologischen Herausforderungen des Ramismus reagiert hat.
The Renaissance witnessed an upsurge in explanations of natural events in terms of invisibly small particles – atoms, corpuscles, minima, monads and particles. The reasons for this development are as varied as are the entities that were proposed. This volume covers the period from the earliest commentaries on Lucretius’ De rerum natura to the sources of Newton’s alchemical texts. Contributors examine key developments in Renaissance physiology, meteorology, metaphysics, theology, chymistry and historiography, all of which came to assign a greater explanatory weight to minute entities. These contributions show that there was no simple ‘revival of atomism’, but that the Renaissance confronts us with a diverse and conceptually messy process.
