DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe narrative covers the periods 1377-1437 and 1440-1461, and includes previously unknown English-language accounts of episodes of the reign of Richard II, such as the Peasants' Revolt. Each continuation is the product of a different political climate, and the introduction explores the narrative and rhetorical structures that lie behind them. As a whole, the edition offers particularly valuable insights into the growth of a highly politicised vernacular historical narrative, and the way in which two medieval compilers sought to represent the history of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries."--Jacket.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKKyffin Williams is the culmination of four years of research at two centres for Kyffin Williams's art, the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Oriel Mon, Anglesey. Dr. Qing Chao Ma's illuminating new study incorporates Kyffin Williams's full range; his inspirational landscapes and seascapes in oil, his delicate watercolours, his distinctive linocuts and his mesmeric portraits. With her particular expertise, the author also draws comparisons between the work of Williams and Chinese art, linking him to other artistic traditions and establishing his rightful place in the worldwide art community. Combined with a rigorous biographical account on the life which informed the work and a rich variety of illustrations, Kyffin Williams is an invaluable contribution to the study and appreciation of one of Wales's foremost artists.'No other artist and author has collated so many diverse examples of Sir Kyffin's art in one publication with such coherence. This is a book put together with great care and purpose and written from the heart.' David Meredith, Sir Kyffin Williams Trust

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWassail songs are part of Welsh folk culture, but what exactly are they? When are they sung? Why? And where do stars and pretty ribbons fit in? This study addresses these questions, identifying and discussing the various forms of winter wassailing found in Wales in times past and present. It focuses specifically on the Welsh poetry written over the centuries at the celebration of several rituals – most particularly at Christmas, the turn of the year, and on Twelfth Night – which served a distinct purpose. The winter wassailing aspired to improve the quality of the earth’s fertility in three specific spheres: the productivity of the land, the animal kingdom, and the human race. This volume provides a rich collection of Welsh songs in their original language, translated into English for the first time, and with musical notation. It also provides a comprehensive analysis of these poems and of the society in which they were sung.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book reproduces in colour, with commentary and full contextual discussion, all the miniatures from unpublished illuminated manuscripts of Le Roman de la Rose in the National Library of Wales. A central work in medieval culture, the Rose was among the most consistently illustrated of medieval secular texts. By presenting all the illuminations from all five illuminated Aberystwyth manuscripts the present study enables absorbing comparisons to be made. This is a book that will stir controversy through its scepticism about moral readings of Rose illustrations and through its insistence on an "accidental" element in the interpretative value of miniatures in secular texts. It will interest anyone who studies art and literature, including students of Chaucer - a poet who absorbed the Roman de la Rose to the core by translating it. The reader is first introduced to the narrative and to characteristic sites of illustration within it. The introduction goes on to identify existing published sources of reproductions, and then to argue the crucial role that a grasp of the practical circumstances of production should play in interpreting medieval miniatures. A final complementary chapter formally describes all seven Aberystwyth Rose manuscripts.
