We live in a “cupcake culture” that celebrates everything with food—often food that’s not good for us. That’s one of the reasons that the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for children ages 2 to 5 and 12 to 19 in the past 30 years, and more than tripled for kids ages 6 to 11 during that same time span. Jenine De Marzo is out to change that culture. She provides all the tools you need to do so in Healthy Breaks: Wellness Activities for the Classroom. This book is filled with teacher-tested 5-to 10-minute activities that take little preparation time and can be done in the classroom, not just in the gym or outdoors. Healthy Breaks promotes healthy lifestyles, beginning with daily wellness activities in the classroom. The activities supplement the physical education and health education programs by promoting natural activity throughout the day. De Marzo also provides suggestions for using these activities in place of the food-centered celebrations that occur throughout the school year. Healthy Breaks presents the following features: • Tools for kindergarten through sixth-grade classroom and health teachers to promote wellness and provide health-related activities in the classroom • Activities for before- and after-school program leaders to increase physical activity and wellness • Clear and concise instructions that make it easy for any teacher to engage students in physical activity and academic learning • Tools for meeting objectives of national wellness policies set by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Schools are uniquely positioned to influence students’ health and wellness. With this resource, classroom teachers can easily integrate activities in their daily schedule. Not only are the activities fun, but they also address the problem of childhood obesity that is rampant in North America. They also aid in meeting objectives of wellness policies set by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Healthy Breaks can be used as a supplemental guide for classroom teachers who want to integrate health, wellness, and movement within their classrooms, as well as an additional guide for physical educators who have limited gym space and resources. And, perhaps best of all, the resource can be used in transforming our “cupcake culture” into a health and wellness culture. In a competitive world, the need for high-achievement runs the roost in planning a typical school day. In order to gain more instructional time, save money due to budget cuts, and address safety concerns, schools have answered back by excluding recess. The result to such dramatic changes has painted the picture of children sitting more than moving and not by choice. Despite the literature on how it benefits cognitive development, behavior, and overall health, recess has become a thing of the past and any form of a break has become creative to integrate physical activity breaks into the classroom and aligning it curriculum, as a means of double dipping. Providing these teachers with ideas of such active breaks, instructional tips of how to administer and manage them, and presenting an awareness of the literature that supports physical activity begins to pave the way for putting a stop to this sedentary epidemic.

Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Masses of activities based on the premise that movement, particularly if it is specific and intentional, enhances learning. "Move to Learn" is a movement programme for children aged five to eight years, delivered in sessions, working one-to-one with an adult or as a small group. Use the programme to liven up a day, provide a 'brain break' in the curriculum or as a complete change for a pupil who is having an emotionally challenging day. Moving promotes learning and other outcomes will follow: Emotional - encouraging happy, secure, confident, motivated and positive emotional states in the limbic system of the brain to support a sense of well-being; Cognitive - using movement to create and strengthen neural pathways, to integrate brain activity and develop 'whole brain' learning; Motor - enabling children to develop their gross and fine motor skills, and to understand being active or calm and to know the difference; Social - using activities to have fun and play together, and to interact and build good relationships; and, Language - to encourage good listening skills and attending to instructions, and to learn to use self-talk to mediate learning. The activities are arranged in ten sections to address different types of movement: Stamina; Large motor actions; Mobility; Balance; Body awareness; Spatial awareness; Dexterity; Fine motor skills; Rhythm and sequence; and, Relaxation. This title includes six sample lesson plans and forms for children's evaluation, parents' evaluation, teachers' questionnaire and parents' questionnaire.
