The work of Mexican artist Mónica Castillo explores the genre of self-portraiture from an informed and deviant point of view. Part of a generation that has had to reconcile the mythology erected around Mexican and Latin American art when it was internationally relaunched in the eighties, the work of Castillo severs the self-portrait-a mode cultified by the Frida Kahlo craze-from its convenient and voyeuristic biographical meanings. "The first exhibition to offer a critical assessment of the artistic experimentation that took place in Mexico during the last three decades of the twentieth century. The exhibition carefully analyzes the origins and emergence of techniques, strategies, andmodes of operation at a particularly significant moment of Mexican history, beginning with the 1968 Student Movement, until the Zapatista upraising in the State of Chiapas.
