Yogesh’s house in Rash Behari Avenue had scores of students visiting him. They all were the students of Children Academy, a school, which taught the correspondence course, yet was masquerading its course as the regular one. The students thronging his home, were the students of standard twelve; they were having their final examination next year in the beginning of March. Hence, they still had almost five months to go before they could take their final examination. Those who were sitting with him, were: Rajesh, Sandeep, Vikash, Preeti, Rosi, Vasuki. Rajesh was his former student, whom he offered his classes at his residence at Kalighat, in the immediate vicinity of famous Kali temple; in fact, the house of Rajesh was located on the way to Mother Kali temple. Incidentally, Yogesh got introduced to Rajesh in the Kalighat Park: those were the days when Yogesh would go to play cricket in Kalighat Park. Scores of young men would come from adjacent areas to play cricket with him. During such interaction, Rajesh got acquainted with Yogesh. Moreover, when Rajesh got to know that Yogesh was doing his Chartered Accountancy, he expressed his desire to take classes from him at his home. Yogesh had already graduated from South City, and was pursuing his Chartered Accountancy course.

Applied sciences in the 20th century have developed and used unitary transforms for concentrating energy. Now, the challenge lies in the expression and use of redundancy to build redundant systems. The Mojette transform is a very simple transform using only additions but with strong properties that break this challenge. The first part of the book gives the basics of the Mojette transform both mathematically and the corresponding optimal algorithms. The second part exemplifies its use through different fields: image representation, watermarking, medical imaging, distributed storage, information and cryptography. This book about a discrete exact Radon transform explains how to usefully produce and cope with redundancy for solving 21st century problems

This cutting-edge volume examines ways to help K–12 students develop the literacy skills and inquiry practices needed for high-level work in different academic domains. Chapters interweave research, theory, and practical applications for teaching literature, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as subjects outside the standard core--physical education, visual and performing arts, and computer science. Essential topics include use of multimodal and digital texts, culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy, and new directions for teacher professional development. The book features vivid classroom examples and samples of student work.

Music is used to sell everything from cars to political candidates. How can words and melody so successfully manipulate us? This volume provides answers by examining the ways in which music of various genres, including folk, popular music, rock, and rap, is used to protest and to promote structures of political, commercial, and religious authority. Students, teachers, musicians, historians, policy makers, and fans of music and popular culture will find answers to questions such as: How does music help to build national identity, foster a sense of patriotism, and reflect changes in society? What role did music play in building socialism in Czechoslovakia and in Belarus’ 2020 democratic movement? What are the most important features of Ukrainian songs of resistance? The book highlights the role of music in the feminist movement by analysing the Riot Grrrl movement and the history of Olivia Records, as well as the use of music as propaganda in the education system and as “purity propaganda” in religion. Two chapters focus on famous American protest singers, Woody Gurthie and Phil Ochs, and one highlights an ex-socialist society’s response to David Bowie’s music.

Over the past decade, the world has experienced a major economic collapse, the increasing racial inequity and high-profile police killings of unarmed Black and Brown people, the persistence of global terrorism, a large-scale refugee crisis, and the negative impacts of global warming. In reaction to social instability, there are growing populist movements in the United States and across the world, which present major challenges for democracy. Concurrently, there has been a rise of grassroots political movements focused on increasing equity in relation to race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and religion. The role of social studies teachers in preparing the next generation of democratic citizens has never been more important, and the call for more social studies teacher educators to help teachers address these critical issues only gets louder. This volume examines how teacher educators are (or are not) supporting beginning and experienced social studies teachers in such turbulent times, and it offers suggestions for moving the field forward by better educating teachers to address growing local, national, and global concerns. In their chapters, authors in social studies education present research with implications for practice related to the following topics: race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, religion, disciplinary literacy, global civics, and social justice. This book is guided by the following overarching questions: What can the research tell us about preparing and developing social studies teachers for an increasingly complex, interconnected, and rapidly changing world? How can we educate social studies teachers to “teach against the grain” (Cochran-Smith, 1991, 2001b), centering their work on social justice, social change, and social responsibility?
