Excerpt from Miscellanies of Edward Fitzgerald Thus far - without fear of trespass - from the Calcutta Review. Though the Sultan showered favours upon him, Omar's epicurean audacity of thought and speech caused him to be regarded askance in his own time and country. He is said to have been especially hated and dreaded by the Sufis, whose practice he ridiculed, and whose faith amounts to little more than his own when stript of the mysticism and formal compliment to Islamism which Omar would not hide under. Their poets, including Hafiz, who are (with the exception of Firdt'isi) the most considerable in Persia, borrowed largely, indeed, of Omar's material, but turning it to a mystical use more convenient to themselves and the people they addressed; a people quite as quick of doubt as of belief; quite as keen of bodily sense as of intellectual; and delighting in a cloudy element com pounded of all, in which they could float luxuriously be tween heaven and earth, and this world and the next, on the wings of a poetical expression, that could be recited indifferently whether at the mosque or the tavern. Omar was too honest of heart as well as of head for this. Having failed (however mistakenly) of finding any Providence but Destiny, and any world but this, he set about making the most of it preferring rather to soothe the soul through the senses into acquiescence with things as they were, than to perplex it with vain mortifications after what they might be. It has been seen that his worldly desires, however, were not exorbitant and he very likely takes a humorous pleasure in exaggerating them above that intellect in whose exercise he must have found great pleasure, though not in a theological direction. However this may be, his worldly pleasures are what they profess to be without any pretence at divine allegory his wine is the veritable juice of the grape his tavern, where it was to be had his Saki, the flesh and blood that poured it out for him all which, and where the roses were in bloom, was all he professed to want of this world or to expect of Paradise. Excerpt from Edward Fitzgerald: An Aftermath Then felt I like some watcher cf the skies ten a new planet swims into his ken. The exgu isite beauty, the faultless form, the singular grace of those amazing stanzas, were not more wonderful than the depth and breadth of their profound philosophy, their knowledge of lifis, their dauntless courage, their serene facing of the ultimate problems of life and of death. Of course the doubt did not spare me, which has assailed many as ignorant as I was of the literature of the East, whether it was the poet or his translator to whom was due this splendid result. Was it, in fact, a reproduction of an antique song, or a m ysti/ication of a great modern, careless of fame, and scornful of his time t Could it be possible that in the eleventh century, so far away as Khorassan, so accomplished a man-qfiletters lived, with such distinction, such breadth, such insight, such calm disillusion, such cheerful and jocund despair 2 Was this Weltschmerz, which we thought a malady of our day, 'endem ic in Persia in 1100 7 My doubt only lasted till I came upon a literal translation of the Rubdiydt, and I saw that not the least remarkable oualil y of Fitz Gerald's poem was its fidelity to the original. Excerpt from Letters Literary Remains of Edward Fitzgerald, Vol. 1 of 7 After Mr. FitzGerald's death in June 1883 a small tin box addressed to me was found by his executors, containing among other things corrected copies of his printed works, and the following letter, which must have been written shortly after my last visit to him at Easter that year: My Dear Wright, I do not suppose it likely that any of my works should be reprinted after my Death. Possibly the three Plays from the Greek, and Calderon's Magico: which have a certain merit in the Form they are cast into, and also in the Versification. However this may be, I venture to commit to you this Box containing Copies of all that I have corrected in the way that I would have them appear, if any of them ever should be resuscitated.
