Excerpt from Milton's Minor Poems The poems, plays, essays, and stories in these small volumes are treated, first of all, as works of literature, which were written to be read and enjoyed, not to be parsed and scanned and pulled to pieces. A short life of the author is given, and a portrait, in order to help the student to know the real person who wrote the book. The introduction tells what it is about, and how it was written, and where the author got the idea, and what it means. The notes at the foot of the page are simply to give the sense of the hard words so that the student can read straight on without turning to a dictionary. The other notes, at the end of the book, explain difficulties and allusions and fine points. The editors are chosen because of their thorough training and special fitness to deal with the books committed to them, and because they agree with this idea of what a Gateway Series ought to be. They express, in each case, their own views of the books which they edit. Simplicity, thoroughness, shortness, and Clearness, - these, we hope, will be the marks of the series. Excerpt from Milton's Minor Poems: L'allegro, IL Penseroso, Comus, And, Lycidas In the preparation of the introduction and notes I have freely consulted the work of previous editors, especially Masson, Verity, Browne, and Trent, and detailed acknowledgment of obligations to these and others will be found in the appropri ate places. To Professor Masson, as author of the Life of Milton, every modern student of Milton owes an immense debt, and I have to add to this general recognition that of the more personal Obligation which a student owes to an inspiring teacher. I also wish to thank, for suggestions in connection with the treatment of the masque, my friends Dr. A. H. Thorndike of Western Reserve University, and Dr. John Lester, recently of Harvard, and, for helpful. Criticisms throughout, Mr. L. T. Damon of the University of Chicago. Excerpt from Minor Poems Milton of his office and drove him into hiding; but, although his writings were burned by the common hangman, he was able himself to escape injury and imprisonment by the payment merely Of some rather heavy fees. It was inevi table under the circumstances that a man of his tempera ment should consider resuming the plan of his youth for the composition of a great poem. As early as 1640 he had projected a drama on the theme of the fall of man, and he had probably begun his epic some time before 1660. Now, with the enforced aid of his three daughters as copyists, he was prepared to carry the design through, dictating during the fall and winter months only. Although it was completed by 1665, the great fire and plague of 1666 delayed its publication, and Paradise Lost did not appear until 1667. Excerpt from Historic Lays: And Minor Poems It is not the fashion of the present time to dispraise oneself, and to do so may seem like affectation but for truth's sake, I feel compelled to remark, that the subjects chosen have not had ample justice done them by me. The faults and imperfections in the Work will be found to abound, and it is not unlikely there may be some plagiarisms but with regard to these last, I trust I shall have credit when I say, that if there are any, they are wholly unintentional on my part. Excerpt from Romances and Minor Poems The contents of this Volume owe their exist ence to vacation hours enjoyed at intervals during the last twenty-five or thirty years. Their com position never interfered with the real business of a laborious life. But it would be unjust to the noble science of jurisprudence to believe that devotion to it (however continuous) is necessarily destructive of all imaginative vivacity, - all youth ful freshness of feeling. On the contrary, the very restraints which legal pursuits put on the imagination, encourage that faculty to re-assert its own rights in lighter and more recreative. Excerpt from Spenser's Minor Poems The view has been held that these words refer to Spenser's departure in 1580, and not in 1591, and also that the preface is by Spenser himself, and not by the printer in whose name it stands. But the evidence advanced does not convince me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Minor Poet: And Other Verse I must confess it; I can feel the pulse A-beating at my heart, yet never knew The throb of cosmic pulses. I lament The death of youth's ideal in my heart And, to be honest, never yet rejoiced In the world's progress - scarce, indeed, discerned (for still it seems that God's a Sisyphus With the world for stone). You shake your head. I'm base, Ignoble? Who is noble - you or I I was not once tizas 9 Ah, my friend, we are As the Fates make us.
