Results of selected projects on Exploration R & D, one of the major research areas implemented by the Commission of European Communities in Brussels on the subject of mineral raw materials, are presented on an international basis. All aspects of the geology and geochemistry of ore deposits and their host rocks are covered. Main headings are according to commodity, i.e. tungsten, chromite, and base metals, rather than by scientific criteria. The scope and subject matter varies from the metallogenic province to the individual deposit. The question of possible application to exploration methodology is explored in several papers. Particularly structural and geochemical techniques are discussed.

Metal resources are used for the production of a wide range of merchandise. Industrial minerals are broadly used for pharmaceuticals and chemical products. Energy is provided on a large scale by non-renewable mineral resources, such as coal. The European Union represents a territory of low mineral potential. Of course there are several exceptions, like Poland having a high production of copper. The European Union is not able to cover the needs of the industry from domestic deposits and is therefore highly dependent on imports. The mineral potential of Western Europe has been used on a very high scale because the mineral wealth was already known in ancient times, whereas the deposits in Southeast Europe have not been exploited on such an extended scale as in Western Europe. Both economic and legal situation of many Southeast European countries are not well known in the Western world. This fact is caused by the changing political situation during the last decades, the therewith connected underdeveloped mining industry and a high complexity of legal requirements. In 2007, Bulgaria and Romania became members of the European Union. They represent the first Southeast European countries being accepted into the European Union. Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey are considered candidate countries, all located in Southeastern Europe. The increasing importance of Southeast Europe for the enlargement of the European Union may upgrade the European economic situation and the mining sector, resulting in reduced import dependence. However, it is essential to upgrade the Southeast European mining industry, which should preferably be done by foreign companies already having experience in mining. Two parameters are essential for investments in the mining industry: the existence of mineral deposits and a consistent legal framework. This books deals with both issues. The aim is to give general and detailed information on the overall economic, mineral economic and legal situation in Southeast European countries as well as to evaluate and compare both issues. This book combines information and research data, which was collected for more than two years and forms the basis for a solid line of discussion as well as for horizontal and vertical integrated evaluation and comparison.
This book presents the results of the major EU project Promine. For the first time there is now a European database available on mineral deposits, as well as 3D, 4D and predictive models of major mineral belts in Europe: Fennoscandia (Skellefteå and Vihanti-Pyhäsalmi), the Fore-Sudetic basin (Kupferschiefer deposits in Poland and Germany), the Hellenic belt in northern Greece, and the Iberian Pyrite belt and Ossa Morena zone in Spain and Portugal. The book also describes the modelling techniques applied and how different types of software are used for three- and four-dimensional modelling. Furthermore, fundamental descriptions of how to build the database structure of three-dimensional geological data are provided and both 2D and 3D predictive models are presented for the main mineral belts of Europe.

The constant increase in the consumption of mineral resources, as well as the growing awareness of their exploitation, is causing deep concern within the scientific community. This concern is justified by the fact that the energy transition will increase the pressure on these resources, as renewable energies require an increased and more diversified quantity of mineral materials. This book presents an overview of the exploitation of these mineral resources, where the natural, regulatory and environmental constraints interfere with economic, financial and geopolitical interests. By mobilizing the fields of the humanities, geosciences and engineering, it also analyzes the challenges that the energy transition will encounter, challenges related to the contradictory effects that the acceleration of the extraction of these resources will have on their physical availability, the economies that exploit them and the populations that live off of them

Metallic Resources 1 presents various studies in notable European metallogenic regions or deposits that enable us to tackle the question of the concentration of metals, especially strategic metals, in various geodynamic settings. An understanding of the geological processes that lead to the formation of deposits and influence their concentrations in the Earth's crust is of the utmost importance when it comes to uncovering new mineral resources. This book puts forward various different methodological approaches necessary in the study of deposits of metallic resources, from field observations to microanalysis. A study of specific geo-politico-economic frameworks is also presented.
