Activities The MOP activities all have the same basic structure: Purpose and Expected OutcomeIn this section, we tell students the specific concepts, principles, and other ideas that will be raised and addressed during the activity. This section also tells students what they are expected to learn Prior Experience / Knowledge Needed first list for students the concepts and principles they should know or be familiar with before attempting the activity. Then, if necessary, we provide any additional background needed to do the activity Main Activity contains the specific questions and problems that probe students' understanding and prepare them to make sense out of the ideas Reflection Main Activity, students re-examine their answers to look for patterns. They are also asked to generalize, abstract, and relate concepts to the situations they have studied

There is oneTeacher's Guide which corresponds with each Student Activities Book, and consists of two parts: Answers and InstructionalAids forTeachers, and Answer Sheets. The Answers and Instructional Aids for Teachers provides advice for how to optimize the effectiveness of the activities, as well as brief explanations and comments on each question in the student activites. The Answer Sheets may be duuplicated and distributed to students as desired. Use of theAnswer Sheets is particularly recommended for activities requiring a lot of graphing or drawing.

This graduate-level text is based on a course in advanced quantum mechanics, taught many times at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Topics include propagator methods, scattering theory, charged particle interactions, alternate approximate methods, and Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations. Problems appear in the flow of the discussion, rather than at the end of chapters. 1992 edition.

What makes a child decide to become a scientist? •For Robert Sapolsky–Stanford professor of biology–it was an argument with a rabbi over a passage in the Bible. •Physicist Lee Smolin traces his inspiration to a volume of Einstein’s work, picked up as a diversion from heartbreak. •Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist and the author of Flow, found his calling through Descartes. Murray Gell-Mann, Nicholas Humphrey, Freeman Dyson . . . 27 scientists in all write about what it was that sent them on the path to their life's work. Illuminating memoir meets superb science writing in stories that invite us to consider what it is–and what it isn’t–that sets the scientific mind apart.

This physics book is the product of more than fifteen years of teaching and innovation experience in physics for JEE main and Advanced aspirants. Our main goals in writing this book are*to present the basic concepts and principles of physics that students need to know for JEE-advanced and other related competitive exams.*to provide a balance of quantitative reasoning and conceptual understanding, with special attention to concepts that have been causing difficulties to student in understanding the concepts.*to develop students' problem-solving skills and confidence in a systematic manner.*to motivate students by integrating real-world examples that build upon their everyday experiences. What's New?Lots! Much is new and unseen before. Here are the big four:1.Every concept is given in student friendly language with various solved problems. The solution is provided with problem solving approach and discussion.2.Checkpoint questions have been added to applicable sections of the text to allow students to pause and test their understanding of the concept explored within the current section. The answers to the Checkpoints are given in answer keys, at the end of the chapter, so that students can confirm their knowledge without jumping too quickly to the provided answer.3.Special attention is given to block over block friction problems, so that student can easily solve them with fun.4.To test the understanding level of students, multiple choice questions, conceptual questions, practice problems with previous years JEE Main and Advanced problems are provided at the end of the whole discussion. Number of dots indicates level of problem difficulty. Straightforward problems (basic level) are indicated by single dot (●), intermediate problems (JEE mains level) are indicated by double dots (●●), whereas challenging problems (advanced level) are indicated by thee dots (●●●). Answer keys with hints and solutions are provided at the end of the chapter. We have kept these goals in mind while developing the main themes of our physics book.

Quantum physics, in contrast to classical physics, allows non-locality and indeterminism in nature. Moreover, the role of the observer seems indispensable in quantum physics. In fact, quantum physics, unlike classical physics, suggests a metaphysics that is not physicalism (which is today’s official metaphysical doctrine). As is well known, physicalism implies a reductive position in the philosophy of mind, specifically in its two core areas, the philosophy of consciousness and the philosophy of action. Quantum physics, in contrast, is compatible with psychological non-reductionism, and actually seems to support it. The essays in this book explore, from various points of view, the possibilities of basing a non-reductive philosophy of mind on quantum physics. In doing so, they not only engage with the ontological and epistemological aspects of the question but also with the neurophysiological ones.
