DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Handbook of Military Law One of the courses which is required of all members of the Students' Army Training Corps in the colleges of the United States is a course on Military Law and Practice. This course includes three subjects: military law, international military customs, and army administration. Military law includes chiefly the procedure of courts-martial. The law relating to courts-martial is very fully expounded in the Manual for Courts-Martial. It is impossible for the present to obtain a sufficient number of copies of the Manual to supply all the members of the Students' Army Training Corps. Moreover the detail with which the subject is treated in the Manual makes the Manual less useful than it would otherwise be as a textbook for a three months' course for undergraduates. On the other hand Colonel Wambaugh's excellent little Guide to the Articles of War, in which the Articles of War are printed without any accompanying comment, does not afford the student enough material as a basis for study in a course of this length. The author, therefore, in arranging the course on military law in Harvard University has found it necessary to supply a brief textbook for the use of the members of his classes. In arranging the present work, all the notes (except a few references), together with the discussions of doubtful questions, the opinions of the author on mooted points, and most of the historical detail, have been omitted, and the original text has been otherwise very materially condensed.
