Following on from the pre-war saloons MG designed the Y-Type, a comfortable four-seater, to run concurrently with the TC from 1947. A year later the tourer was announced and rather unsportingly likened to a (bath tub÷. However, they kept the MG family car going until the modern, Palmer-designed Z-Type was introduced in 1954. Again a good family car fitted with the new BMC B-series engine of 1489cc. The engine was upgraded in 1956 and with a few cosmetic changes now became the ZB. Production of the ZA/ZB Magnettes came to an end in 1958. This is a book of contemporary road tests, new model introductions, technical and specification data, long-term tests, buying second hand, rallying and touring.

During the 1960s, the automobile finally secured its position as an indispensable component of daily life in Britain. Car ownership more than doubled from approximately one car for every 10 people in 1960 to one car for every 4.8 people by 1970. Consumers no longer asked "Do we need a car?" but "What car shall we have?" This well-illustrated history analyzes how both domestic car manufacturers and importers advertised their products in this growing market, identifying trends and themes. Over 180 advertisement illustrations are included.
