Excerpt from Methods of Gas Analysis In publishing my "New Methods for the Analysis of Gases," it was not my intention to write a manual of gas analysis, but merely to describe my own researches and the construction of apparatus. My present plan, however, after ten years' experience and the most varied work with gases and their analysis, is to describe all of the operations which are involved in the analysis of gases with my apparatus. I have thought to give the book especial value by limiting myself to the description of those methods which, in my opinion, are at the present time the most practical. I have not endeavoured to give a complete description of all known methods, because the book would then become too bulky to be used as the laboratory guide which it is intended to be. The apparatus devised by Pettersson has been described, because a wholly new principle in the measurement of gases is there brought into use. In the following pages I hope to give a guide to gas analysis by the help of which the various examinations, even the most difficult, can be carried out. The New Edition of the Well-Regarded Handbook on Gas Chromatography Since the publication of the highly successful first edition of Basic Gas Chromatography, the practice of chromatography has undergone several notable developments. Basic Gas Chromatography, Second Edition covers the latest in the field, giving readers the most up-to-date guide available, while maintaining the first edition's practical, applied approach to the subject and its accessibility to a wide range of readers. The text provides comprehensive coverage of basic topics in the field, such as stationary phases, packed columns and inlets, capillary columns and inlets, detectors, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. At the same time, the coverage also features key additions and updated topics including: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) Sampling methods Multidimensional gas chromatography Fast gas chromatography Gas chromatography analysis of nonvolatile compounds Inverse gas chromatography and pyrolysis gas chromatography Along with these new and updated topics, the references, resources, and Web sites in Basic Gas Chromatography have been revised to reflect the state of the field. Concise and fundamental in its coverage, Basic Gas Chromatography, Second Edition remains the standard handbook for everyone from undergraduates studying analytical chemistry to working industrial chemists.

This volume focuses on progress in applying the lattice gas approach to partial differential equations that arise in simulating the flow of fluids.Lattice gas methods are new parallel, high-resolution, high-efficiency techniques for solving partial differential equations. This volume focuses on progress in applying the lattice gas approach to partial differential equations that arise in simulating the flow of fluids. It introduces the lattice Boltzmann equation, a new direction in lattice gas research that considerably reduces fluctuations. The twenty-seven contributions explore the many available software options exploiting the fact that lattice gas methods are completely parallel, which produces significant gains in speed. Following an overview of work done in the past five years and a discussion of frontiers, the chapters describe viscosity modeling and hydrodynamic mode analyses, multiphase flows and porous media, reactions and diffusion, basic relations and long-time correlations, the lattice Boltzmann equation, computer hardware, and lattice gas applications.Gary D. Doolen is Acting Director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Excerpt from The Chemical Examination of Water, Sewage, Foods: And Other Substances The books included in the Series present in a useful and handy form the knowledge now available in many branches of the subject. They are written by experts, and the authors are occupied, or have been occupied, either in investigations connected with the various themes or in their application and administration. They include the latest scientific and practical information offered in a manner which is not too technical. The bibliographies contain references to the literature of each subject which will ensure their utility to the Specialist. It has been the desire of the editors to arrange that the books should appeal to various classes of readers and it is hoped that they will be useful to the medical profession at home and abroad, to bacteriologists and laboratory students, to municipal engineers and architects, to medical officers of health and sanitary in spectors and to teachers and administrators. Many of the volumes Will contain material Which will be suggestive and instructive to members of Public Health and Hygiene Committees and it is intended that they shall seek to influence the large body of educated and intelligent public opinion interested in the problems of public health.
