We sit in no judgment upon the acts and motives of that day as to pastor or people. Let oblivion fall on whatever separated friend from friend and the mantle of charity lie over his name, as the winding sheet has long lain over his manly form, and let him be kindly remembered for the long years of service he rendered the church, and your forefather's souls. After a vacancy of about six months, Rev. Dr. J. W. Richards took charge of the congregation in November, 1845. His administration was marked by pastoral diligence and prudence, and, despite the secession of Christ Church and the distractions through which the congregation had but recently passed, the membership was increased to more than its original strength. In 1846 the parsonage adjoining the church was built, at an expense of about twenty nine hundred dollars. He preached his farewell sermon March 9, 1851, to assume charge of his ancestral church, at Reading. He left a record of the officers of the church at the time of his departure. Of the nine elders then in office not one survives; of the six deacons but three, in the persons of John Able, then marked Jr., Robert T. Horn and J. I. Bauer, still active members of the St. John's Church of to-day. With Zachariah (1:5) we may ask: "your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live forever?" From Dr. Richard's day forward, the events of the lives of your pastors are so familiar to most of you that brevity of statement will have to be considered.
