DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book focuses on the different forms in which authorship came to be expressed in eighteenth-century Italian publishing. It analyses both the affirmation of the “author function”, and, above all, its paradoxical opposite: the use of anonymity, a centuries-old practice present everywhere in Europe but often neglected by scholarship. The reasons why authors chose to publish their works anonymously were manifold, including prudence, fear of censorship, modesty, fear of personal criticism, or simple divertissement. In many cases, it was an ethical choice, especially for ecclesiastics. The Italian case provides a key perspective on the study of anonymity in the European context, contributing to the analysis of an overlooked topic in academic studies.

The infidelities of an actress by whom I had been deceived, were detailed by me in the preceding chapter, neither by way of ornamenting my memoirs, nor drawing forth compliments on my simplicity; but as the anecdote was inserted in a work, which served to revenge me, I thought I could not avoid giving a historical account of the episode before speaking of the principal subject. Every body knows the wretched Spanish play which the Italians call II Convitato di Pietra, the French he Festin de Pierre, and the English Don Juan. In Italy I always considered it with horror, and I conld not conceive how such a farce conld for so long a time draw crowds together, and prove the delight of a polished people. The Italian comedians were themselves astonished; and, either by way of joke or from ignorance, some of them used to say that the author of Don Juan had...

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDiplomats had multiple tasks: not only negotiating with the representatives of other states, but also mediating culture and knowledge, and not least elaborating reports on their observations of politics, society, and culture. Culture, according to the studies featured in this book, is defined as a complex sphere including aspects like systems of communication, literature, music, arts, education, and the creation of knowledge. This edition containing contributions from six conferences held in Vienna and Istanbul by the Don Juan Archiv Wien focuses on the complex diplomatic and cultural relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe from the time of the early embassies to Istanbul up to "Tanzimat".
