DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Memoirs of Ebenezer Elliott, the Corn Law Rhymer: With Criticisms Upon His Writings On the appearance of the first edition of this work, or that part of it, rather, which is properly mine, I was accused by some of Elliott's friends of doing him an injustice in saying that he never fully appreciated Wordsworth as a poet. But upon mature consideration, I am inclined to stand by that statement. I know well enough that numerous passages from the letters and prose writings of Elliott might be adduced to show that he held Wordsworth in high estimation, and he is credited to this extent in my analysis of his genius and writings. What he did not appreciate, however, was what Wordsworth most valued in the judgment of his readers, namely, the spirituality with which he endeavoured to invest external nature, and the life of man. And this endeavour, which lies at the root of all Wordsworth's writings, Elliott had little or no sympathy with.
