Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Character of Thomas Wilson, Esq.: Treasurer of Highbury College The reception which this work has met with from that portion of the periodical press, the conductors of which have deemed it worthy of any particular notice, has been gratifying to the author. An higher encouragement has been derived from the fact, which has fallen under his own knowledge, that in more than one instance an effect so decidedly beneficial has been produced on the reader's mind, as to lead, by the blessing of God, to important practical results. It is a source of peculiar gratification to the author that the publication of this Memoir has contributed, in some degree, to diffuse the spirit of expansive liberality which led his honoured father to con secrate a large amount of property to the building of houses devoted to God; and he cannot refrain from publicly ex pressing the delight with which he has observed, that since the work appeared, a new and more powerful impulse has been given, among the Congregational Nonconformists of London, to the erection of chapels in those large suburban towns which are rapidly springing up in all directions round the vast metropolis of our country. To his own mind nothing ap pears more clearly, than the urgent imperative duty, devolving especially upon those who by birth, residence, or other cir cumstances, are immediately connected with the metropolis, to adopt the most active measures and to raise the most liberal contributions in order to multiply large and commodious chapels in the constantly extending inhabited region around that already immense city. He will venture here to record his own firm, deliberate conviction, that if the English Independents desire in the most effectual manner to advance the highest interest of their country, by promoting the eternal welfare of their fellow-country men, they will combine their energies to carry forward this work in the populous cities and towns of England. By erecting fifty appropriate edifices in London. And fifty more in the larger towns, consecrated to the public worship of God, and the faith ful preaching of the Gospel, we should, he is firmly persuaded, more effectually promote the cause of our Lord and Saviour than by any other means. Professor F.A. Lindeman, The Prof, was Winston Churchill's adviser during World War II. They met almost daily during the week and Lindemann spent most weekends at Chequers. Lindemann provided the Prime Minister with advice, suggestions and the elucidation of complex scientific and economic issues during a war in which the application of rapidly developing scientific techniques was of decisive importance.
