For a long period Soil Mechanics has remained at the semi-empirica stage, and only a few decades ago it has shown a tendency to become a fundamental science. However, this evolution is taking place slowly; in spite of the efforts of numerous research scientists, the very complex rheological laws of soils are still not well known. Even if these laws were elucidated, it would take a long time still to deduce simple rules from them for reliable and convenient use in current practical engineer ing. In the pursuit of these distant aims - and of others more imme diate - fundamental research and applied research are very active, both in Rheology and Soil Mechanics. The complexity of the problems to be solved should incite the laboratory researchers and the engineers to a continuous collaboration. Everyone acknowledges the advantage of these connections although aware of the difficulty of realizing this wish. However, contacts are being made little by little between the repre sentatives of the different branches of Rheology and Soil Mechanics, to the great benefit of science. The bureau of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), aware of the importance of these two associat ed fields of mechanics, considered it possible to accelerate the natural and necessary processus of their interpenetration by organizing in Grenoble, from 1st to 8th April 1964 an International Symposium on Rheology and Soil Mechanics.

Dimensional analysis is the basis for the determination of laws that allow the experimental results obtained on a model to be transposed to the fluid system at full scale (a prototype). The similarity in fluid mechanics then allows for better redefinition of the analysis by removing dimensionless elements. This book deals with these two tools, with a focus on the Rayleigh method and the Vaschy-Buckingham method. It deals with the homogeneity of the equations and the conversion between the systems of units SI and CGS, and presents the dimensional analysis approach, before addressing the similarity of flows. Dimensional Analysis and Similarity in Fluid Mechanics proposes a scale model and presents numerous exercises combining these two methods. It is accessible to students from their first year of a bachelorÂs degree.

This textbook provides a coherent and structured overview of fluid mechanics, a discipline concerned with many natural phenomena and at the very heart of the most diversified industrial applications and human activities. The balance between phenomenological analysis, physical conceptualization and mathematical formulation serve both as a unifying educational marker and as a methodological guide to the three parts of the work. The thermo-mechanical motion equations of a homogeneous single-phase fluid are established, from which flow models (perfect fluid, viscous) and motion classes (isovolume, barotropic, irrotational, etc.) are derived. Incompressible, potential flows and compressible flows, both in an isentropic evolution and shock, of an ideal inviscid fluid are addressed in the second part. The viscous fluid is the subject of the last one, with the creeping motion regime and the laminar, dynamic and thermal boundary layer. Historical perspectives are included whenever they enrich the understanding of modern concepts. Many examples, chosen for their pedagogical relevance, are dealt with in exercises. The book is intended as a teaching tool for undergraduate students, wishing to acquire a first command of fluid mechanics, as well as graduates in advanced courses and engineers in other fields, concerned with completing what is sometimes a scattered body of knowledge.

Vocabulary of Mechanics, Volume 2: Group 15. Mechanics of Fluids provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the mechanics of fluids. This book covers a variety of topics, including fluid mechanics, hydrostatics, aeromechanics, gas dynamics, aeroelasticity, and dynamic meteorology. Organized into two parts encompassing 95 sections, this volume begins with an overview of the branch of mechanics dealing with the phenomena of fluids in motion and at rest. This text then deals with the geometrical description of the flow of matter, irrespectively of the forces producing the motion. Other sections consider the instantaneous motion of a fluid element wherein the motion is composed of translation of the center of mass of a fluid element. This book discusses as well the relative equilibrium of liquids. The final section deals with the atmospheric air motion caused by several factors. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and research workers.
