This story centres on sensitivity to the feelings of others, gratitude, and teamwork. The three smallest cups in a set of stacking cups felt that they were more important than the other cups just because they were stacked right on top. The little boy Matthew gently but firmly pointed out to them that they were perched at the top of the stack only because of the help and support they received from the other cups. All were important in teamwork endeavours, they learnt. One reviewer who is also an author of childrens books (Dr. Cecilia Leong) described it as a delightful story that children can relate to as most children would have played with stacking cups in one way or another. The story is written with charming prose that rhymes and would appeal to young children. The story is simple yet it teaches the importance of valuing every single member of your family or team regardless of his or her position. The watercolour illustrations convey the innocence and purity of a childs inner wisdom. The book is a wonderful story for family time.

Matthew, like other young children, loves to play outdoors. But when the regions annual hazepollutive smog at its worstcomes around, Matthew is forced to stay indoors. Ever curious, he asks, Why cant I see the sky? In this delightful childrens story, Wind blames the burning Trees in the forests. Trees, in turn, blame the tinderbox-like Peat soil, which in turn points the finger at Man, who says he needs fertile soil to grow his crops. Finally, Matthew asks, How can we get back clearer days? The included suggested questions enable adults to use the storyline to help children find out more and to appreciate the urgency of sustaining this precious Earth. One reviewer says (Ms Felicia Choon, a primary school teacher), I wished that the children who read this book can be empowered with the knowledge that they make a difference in their own small ways. If I were to read this book in class, it would definitely pathed its way into a lengthy discussion on what we can do here to help with the situation there. This is the third book in the Matthew series. The other two, also published by Partridge, are Matthew and the Thirsty Sun and Matthews Stacking Cups.

A “darkly comic, wise and irresistible” novel of friendship, romance, and the chaos in between, from one of Britain’s bestselling authors (Publishers Weekly). When Henry Tillotson comes back from the war with a mysterious new bride from Egypt, everyone is intrigued. But intrigue turns to outright confusion when his new wife retreats to her room and refuses to leave her bed, much less the house, stranding poor Henry in a loveless marriage. Antonia and Barbara are captivated by Henry and his lavish country estate, Cotteshaw, from the very first time they are asked to visit for a dinner party with their boyfriends. Drawn by his charm, his wife’s madness and beauty, and his unusual lifestyle, they cannot help but be intrigued by their host. But as time passes, their relationships grow and change, bringing weddings, engagements, children, and even the occasional illicit liaison—as the strange heritage of Cotteshaw begins to affect all who pass through its doors. Wesley once again proves herself a master of the modern novel of manners in this energetic tale that is simultaneously laugh-out-loud funny, outrageously irreverent, and poignant. “As always, the dialogue snaps with vigor. . . . Another bright and biting novel.” —Kirkus Reviews
