This Georgian-era romance “with elopements, rescues, duels, and cards . . . [is] a picturesque and engaging story” from the acclaimed master of the genre (The Spectator). When Prudence and Robin Tremaine find themselves on the wrong side of the Jacobite rebellion, the siblings follow their infamous father’s cunning footsteps and switch identities, escaping to London with Prudence posing as a dashing gentleman and Robin as a lovely young woman. They are so skillful, in fact, that they are warmly embraced, with the disguised Prudence finding herself in an alliance with the handsome Sir Anthony Fanshawe and the concealed Robin performing a rescue that wins him the admiration of the beautiful Letitia Grayson. But when Prudence finds herself falling for Sir Anthony, and Robin struggles to resist the tender charms of Letitia, they wonder if they’ll ever be able to safely let go of their masquerade to answer the call of love. Praise for the writing of Georgette Heyer: “If you haven’t read her yet, I envy you.” —Harriet Evans “My favourite historical novelist.” —Margaret Drabble “Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen.” —Publishers Weekly “A writer of great wit and style.” —The Daily Telegraph

Two incidents, widely different in character yet bound together by results, marked the night of January the twenty-third. On that night the blackest fog within a four years' memory fell upon certain portions of London, and also on that night came the first announcement of the border risings against the Persian government in the province of Khorasan the announcement that, speculated upon, even smiled at, at the time, assumed such significance in the light of after events. . . . and now in London a familiar man takes the part he took on years ago, and has kept in secret all these years: he is a masquerader. He hasplayed his part, lived for his hour, and proved himself long since. Now he takes steps back into the dim world of unrealized hopes and unachieved ambitions. The Great Game is in motion, and at stake is the fate of nations -- and of the Masquerader, too.

Images of Jamaica and the Bahamas as tropical paradises full of palm trees, white sandy beaches, and inviting warm water seem timeless. Surprisingly, the origins of those images can be traced back to the roots of the islands’ tourism industry in the 1880s. As Krista A. Thompson explains, in the late nineteenth century, tourism promoters, backed by British colonial administrators, began to market Jamaica and the Bahamas as picturesque “tropical” paradises. They hired photographers and artists to create carefully crafted representations, which then circulated internationally via postcards and illustrated guides and lectures. Illustrated with more than one hundred images, including many in color, An Eye for the Tropics is a nuanced evaluation of the aesthetics of the “tropicalizing images” and their effects on Jamaica and the Bahamas. Thompson describes how representations created to project an image to the outside world altered everyday life on the islands. Hoteliers imported tropical plants to make the islands look more like the images. Many prominent tourist-oriented spaces, including hotels and famous beaches, became off-limits to the islands’ black populations, who were encouraged to act like the disciplined, loyal colonial subjects depicted in the pictures. Analyzing the work of specific photographers and artists who created tropical representations of Jamaica and the Bahamas between the 1880s and the 1930s, Thompson shows how their images differ from the English picturesque landscape tradition. Turning to the present, she examines how tropicalizing images are deconstructed in works by contemporary artists—including Christopher Cozier, David Bailey, and Irénée Shaw—at the same time that they remain a staple of postcolonial governments’ vigorous efforts to attract tourists.

The most important female English novelist of the 1720s, Eliza Haywood is famous for writing scandalous fiction about London society. Fast-moving, controversial, and sometimes disturbing, Haywood's short novels The Masqueraders and The Surprize are valuable sources for the study of eighteenth-century gender and identity, the social history of masquerade, the dangers of courtship and seduction, and conceptions of elite and popular cultures. Despite their common theme of masquerade and seduction, the two short novels are a study in contrasts. The Masqueraders features the whirl of London life, with a libertine anti-hero and his serial seductions of women who believe that they can manipulate the social conventions that are expected to limit them. The Surprize, on the other hand, is an uncharacteristically sentimental story in which a similarly salacious plot ends in rewards for the good and virtuous. Well suited to the teaching of these two texts, this volume contains annotated scholarly editions of both novels, an extensive introduction, and useful appendices that discuss the masquerade's role in eighteenth-century debates on gender, morality, and identity.
