Excerpt from Maryland Tax Digest As will be noted, the subjects are classified alphabetically for convenient reference, and it is hoped that this arrange ment will meet with the approval of those who may use the volume. The Digest is almost necessarily limited in. Bulk, as the field which it has sought to cover comprises only one gen eral subject. The compiler trusts, however, that those who may have occasion to fully examine its pages, will find that all the vital and momentous tax issues in the state which have found their final settlement in the Court of Appeals have been fairly well presented. Excerpt from Beginnings of Maryland, 1631 1639 The twenty-fifth of March is the day on which the first colonists sent out by Lord Baltimore landed on the soil of Maryland. In 1903, that day was celebrated throughout the schools of the State as Maryland Day, and the establishment of that custom seems to make a re statdment of the beginnings of the settlement of the Province, a task worthy of accomplishment. The at tempt is here made to trace these beginnings, with the same minute care with which the citizens of Massachusetts have traced the beginnings of their Commonwealth. NO one has attempted to do this in an elaborate fashion, since the publication of the Archives of Maryland has unlocked the treasures of our [early records. A careful study of these printed records yields many new details, and ad ditional facts of interest, with reference to the Kent Island Colony, are found in the manuscript records of the English Court of Admiralty. Excerpt from Archives of Maryland: Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1671 1681 While the last volume of the Archives was passing through the press, the Maryland Historical Society was so fortunate as to discover two volumes of original Council Records of which no copies are known to exist, and which are therefore of the highest importance. They had been removed from Annapolis certainly more than thirty years ago, and were discovered almost by accident. Our regular series of Council Records broke off in 1674' (the record for the three or four previous years having been very fragmentary), after which there was a void of eighteen years in the original journals. This void we were partly enabled to fill by the discovery of a Copy of a Council Book for the years 1686 - 1689 preserved In the Public Record Office, London, of which the Society had a transcript made, which has been printed in the Archives. This however still left a gap of twelve years, which we bridged, imperfectly, but as far as was then in our power, by copies of papers belonging to that time, preserved in the English Record Office. The recent discovery, however, enables us almost completely to restore the record of those years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Founders of Maryland: As Portrayed in Manuscripts, Provincial Records and Early Documents Every year, the citizens of ancient Padua crowd the costly church, dedicated to their townsman, the Italian Saint Anthony, and hang upon its walls, or around the shrine, sketches in oil, or water colors, commemorative of important events in their lives. One of the many good results of the centennial year of the American Republic, is the taking down from the garrets, the neglected portraits of our forefathers, the removal of the stains and dust, the substitution of new frames, for those battered and worm eaten, and in remembering their labors for posterity. With the aid of manuscripts, brought to light during the last decade, and access to the papers of the British Record Office, we can now portray more accurately, and hang in a better light, the Founders of Maryland.
