DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn Martin Luther's 'The Bondage of the Will', the author presents a scathing critique of free will within the context of the Protestant Reformation. Written in a clear and straightforward manner, Luther argues against the notion of human free will in salvation, asserting the sovereignty of God's grace. Drawing upon biblical texts and engaging with the writings of his opponent, Erasmus, Luther dismantles the idea that humans have the power to choose their own salvation. The book is a significant theological work that challenges preconceived notions of free will and emphasizes the importance of divine grace in the Christian faith. Martin Luther, a key figure in the Reformation, was driven to write 'The Bondage of the Will' in response to Erasmus' defense of free will. Luther's deep knowledge of theology and commitment to his convictions shine through in this work, as he presents a compelling argument in favor of predestination and divine sovereignty. His background as a theologian and reformer lends credibility to his polemic against free will. I highly recommend 'The Bondage of the Will' to readers interested in the theological debates of the Reformation era, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between human agency and divine sovereignty in Christian theology.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Martin Luther on the Bondage of the Will: Written in Answer to the Diatribe of Erasmus on Free-Will And moreover, I speak concerning the asserting of those things, which are delivered to us from above in the holy scriptures. Were it not so, we should want neither Erasmus nor any other instructor to teach us, that, in things doubtful, useless, or unne cessary; assertions, contentions, and strivings, would be not only absurd, but impious: and Paul condemns such in more places than one. Nor do you, I believe, speak of these things, unless, as a ridiculous orator, you wish to take up one subject, and go on with another, as the Roman Emperor did with his Turbot; or, with the madness of a wicked writer, you wish.to contend, that the article concerning Free-will is doubtful, or not necessary. Be sceptics and academics far from us Chris tians; but be there with us assertors twofold more determined. Than the stoics themselves. How often does the apostle Paul require that assurance of faith; that is, that most certain, and most firm assertion of Conscience, calling it, Rom. X., confession, Withthe mouth confession is made unto salvation? And Christ also saith, Whosoever confesseth me before men, hinwill I confess Mrs my Father Peter commands as to give a reason of the hope that Is in us. But why should I dwell upon this; nothing is more. Known and more general among Christians than assertions. DOWNLOAD EBOOKOn the Bondage of the Will was Martin Luther's reply to Desiderius Erasmus' work "On Free Will," which had appeared in 1524 as Erasmus' first public attack on Luther after Erasmus had been wary about the methods of Luther for many years. At issue was whether human beings, after the Fall of Man, are free to choose good or evil. Erasmus had asserted that all humans possessed free will and that the doctrine of predestination was not in accord with the teachings contained in the Bible. Luther's response was to reason that sin incapacitates human beings from working out their own salvation, and that they are completely incapable of bringing themselves to God. The debate between Luther and Erasmus is one of the earliest of the Reformation over the issue of free will and predestination.
