DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis address was given in 1883 at a time when there was a movement to allow the sanctifying in the church of the marriage between a widowed man and his dead wife's sister. At the time it was illegal, and any such marriage was voided. Lord Forbes, who gave the address was a Scottish peer who represented Scotland in the House of Lords. He was vehemently opposed to any change to the ruling. Later that year a Bill was presented to Parliament which eventually, in 1902, reversed this rule.
