The world at the turn of the twentieth century was in the throes of "Marconi-mania"-brought on by an incredible invention that no one could quite explain, and by a dapper and eccentric figure (who would one day win the newly minted Nobel Prize) at the center of it all. At a time when the telephone, telegraph, and electricity made the whole world wonder just what science would think of next, the startling answer had come in 1896 in the form of two mysterious wooden boxes containing a device one Guglielmo Marconi had rigged up to transmit messages "through the ether." It was the birth of the radio, and no scientist in Europe or America, not even Marconi himself, could at first explain how it worked -- it just did. And no one knew how far these radio waves could travel, until 1903, when a message from President Theodore Roosevelt to the king of England flashed from Cape Cod to Cornwall clear across the Atlantic. Here is a rich portrait of the man and his era-and a captivating tale of science and scientists, business and businessmen. There are stories of British blowhards, American con artists-and Marconi himself: a character par excellence, who eventually winds up a virtual prisoner of his worldwide fame and fortune.

As I researched for the economy of Jesus, I came across an interesting discovery. The diet of the Israelites had dramatically changed from meat to fish. When you follow Jesus around the Sea of Galilee, you realize most of Jesus' disciples were fishermen, and the two miracles of feeding the 4,000 and 5,000 were involved with fish and bread, and people from the neighboring ten towns flocked to Galilee for His healing, preaching, and an easy living. I was not surprised that the Israelites consumed fish extensively. It was Jesus' way of creating that exuberant fish industry to draw people to Him and incubate more Christians than ever. He has promised us through the whole Bible that whoever believes in Him will have an eternal and abundant life. Today, I am not lacking because I have discovered His secret and would like to share it with you. But first thing first: believe every word in the Bible. Some Christians may have heard of Qumran, commonly called the Dead Sea Scrolls, which prove the authenticity of the Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts of the Old Testament and the rest of the books in the Bible, but they may not have realized that hundreds of credited evangelical leaders, theologians, and scholars had agreed and signed off on the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. If you know the Bible we have in our hand today has gone through a long process of canonization, then you will look at it differently, and you will believe every word it says. If you want that spiritually and physically abundant life, you have to believe every word it says. Look at the Biblical Patriarchs, did they have abundant lives or second-rate ones? Yes, we could have a better life, the secret is in God Rocks!

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An inspiring and riveting memoir from the most important woman in the history of television journalism. “A delightful tale of the golden age of television.... Juicy behind-the scenes details of the celebrities she’s interviewed, mixed in with stories of her own trials and tribulations.” —The Washington Post After more than fifty years of interviewing heads of state, world leaders, movie stars, criminals, murderers, inspirational figures, and celebrities of all kinds, Barbara Walters turns her gift for examination onto her own extraordinary life. Walters was the product of a turbulent childhood that featured a glamorous father who made and lost several fortunes as well as the companionship of a mentally challenged sister. Feelings of responsibility for her family played a large part in the choices she made as she grew up: the friendships she developed, the relationships she had, the marriages she tried to make work. Ultimately, thanks to her drive and a decent amount of luck, Walters made it to the top of a male-dominated industry. She was the first woman cohost of the Today show, the first female network news coanchor, the host and producer of countless top-rated Specials, the star of 20/20, and the creator and cohost of The View. She has not only interviewed the world’s most fascinating figures, she has become a part of their world. These are just a few of the names that play a key role in her life, career, and book: Yasir Arafat, Warren Beatty, Menachem Begin, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Roy Cohn, the Dalai Lama, Princess Diana, Katharine Hepburn, King Hussein, Angelina Jolie, Henry Kissinger, Monica Lewinsky, Richard Nixon, Rosie O’Donnell, Christopher Reeve, Anwar Sadat, John Wayne . . . the list goes on. Barbara Walters has spent a lifetime auditioning: for her bosses at the TV networks, for millions of viewers, for the most famous people in the world, and even for her own daughter, with whom she has had a difficult but ultimately quite wonderful and moving relationship. This book, in some ways, is her final audition, as she fully opens up both her private and public lives. In doing so, she has given us a story that is heartbreaking and honest, surprising and fun, sometimes startling, and always fascinating.

One of the Best Books of the Year The Washington Post • Los Angeles Times • Milwaukee Journal Sentinel The story of Frank Sinatra’s second act, Sinatra finds the Chairman on top of the world, riding high after an Oscar victory—and firmly reestablished as the top recording artist of his day. Following Sinatra from the mid-1950s to his death in 1998, Kaplan uncovers the man behind the myth, revealing by turns the peerless singer, the (sometimes) powerful actor, the business mogul, the tireless lover, and—of course—the close associate of the powerful and infamous. It was in these decades that the enduring legacy of Frank Sinatra was forged, and Kaplan vividly captures “Ol’ Blue Eyes” in his later years. The sequel to the New York Times best-selling Frank, here is the concluding volume of the definitive biography of "The Entertainer of the Century."

It is through a deep reflection that I have been able to frame the title of this book, which is The Theatre of Love, Sex, Marriage and Beyond. In fact, the contents of this book take their roots from the title. This book is designed to cover as much as possible, a substantial number of the various aspects of the subjects I have discussed, as dealt with specifically by the innumerable authors at one time or the other. It is without the slightest doubt that not all or every aspect of the subjects of love, sex, and marriagewritten or propounded by authors, researchers, psychologists, sexologists, and medical scientistscan be found in one book. These different and innumerable ideas, theories, hypothesis, and research findings are as scattered in uncountable books, articles, newsprints, or papers and magazines. I will, in all honesty, admit that what I have attempted to do in this book is only a tip of the iceberg, considering the infinitude of the intellectual input and output of others in the myriad of data on the subject. I have divided this book into four parts: love, sex, marriage, and the beyond. These notwithstanding, I hope this humble rendition, however inadequate, would give readers a general overview of the essentials of these enigmatic subjects of love, sex, marriage, and the beyond.

A compulsively readable, startling, and philosophically rich book about marriage, from an acclaimed critic and filmmaker "Baum is an erudite and entertaining guide through the landscape of marriage. . . . A fascinating exploration."--Stephanie Merritt, The Guardian "As far back as our history books go, we have no record of a time preceding marriage. Isn't that an extraordinary fact?" So writes Devorah Baum in this searching and revelatory book. Marriage, for better or for worse, is how humans have organized their world and told their story. Straight, queer, coupled, single: none live outside the remit of marriage. One might as well try to live beyond language. But when confronted with the question "What do intellectuals think of marriage?" Baum concludes that most philosophers have preferred to avoid the subject. Is marriage then an intellectual blind spot? To fill in the gaps, she draws on a wide range of cultural material, from the classical to the contemporary, while interweaving reflections on her own experiences of matrimony to both critique and celebrate marriage's many contradictions and its profound effects on us all. In doing so, she reveals how marriage has worked as a cover story for power and its abuses on the one hand, and for subversive and even utopian relational practices on the other. Entertaining, illuminating, consoling, and candid, On Marriage is an unprecedented investigation of what we are really talking about when we talk about marriage.
