Yield management has always been considered a teclinique for large companies, whether these be airlines, railroad, car rental or hotel companies. Its application to the small and medium sized businesses that characterise the tourism industry in many countries, Italy in the first place, has never been totally excluded, but its implementation and subsequent actuation has always been considered too expensive for this type of business. In recent years all this has been changing. Technology and research have opened up new possibilities for its application at costs, and following methods, that are acceptable even to those who cannot access sophisticated statistics or mathematics instruments. The evolution and the rapid changes in the reference scenarios both of the demand and the offer, have done the rest. It has become clear that to compete in a market as vast as the tourism one, one must apply the principles and techniques of marketing to produce and deliver a service that can satisfy the needs of the client better than the competition. In the same way, however, a deeper knowledge of the processes of the clientele's choice, acquisition and consumption permits the formulation of increasingly accurate forecasts of their behaviour and an understanding of the significance and importance that each client segment attaches to the purchase and consumption of a particular service. In this way the application of the yield management technique has assumed a new and more important position as well as a greater and constant spread.

Early life experiences of the author in the northern province of Zambia in Africa, and training in healthcare with subsequent employment in the mining industry healthcare owned jointly by the Anglo-American Corporation and the Government of the Republic of Zambia, mark the beginning of the journey of duty. After working for eight years from 1990 to 1998, this initial part of the journey of duty becomes full of challenging encounters and adventure stories associated with copper mining operations. Moving to Britain as a migrant worker marks the second part of the long journey of duty. Over the next 22 years, the author is immersed in the busy National Health Service (NHS), an umbrella organisation for thousands of hospitals and allied institutions. Experiencing the British way of life becomes fascinating but then part of this way of life is about how politics influence the way healthcare is delivered by the NHS which takes the centre stage throughout the rest of this book. The NHS tales about itsorigins, evolution, inspiring radical transformation in the 21st century, traffic light targets, and the dark times of scandals with red tape are quite revealing especially for people intending to work, train or are working as healthcare professionals. In the thick of it are some of the shining stars with rare qualities of fixing the broken parts of the healthcare systems that end this book.

Who among us still thinks the year 2000 is just an arbitrary turn of a calendar page? Why does its approach bring both fear of apocalyptic destruction and the promise of millennial salvation? Lee Quinby investigates how anxiety about the arrival of the new century casts everything from El Niño to sheep cloning in apocalyptic terms, simultaneously fueling panic and fostering unfounded hope for a perfect world. Millennial rhetoric is both pervasive and persuasive, Quinby argues, because it operates with mutually reinforcing doses of fear and hope. Religious and secular anxiety erupts over charged issues such as sex education, the regulation of cyberspace, and the Christian masculinity of the Promise Keepers. Quinby exposes the dangers of millennialist solutions, which link misogyny, homophobia, and racism with absolutist claims about truth, morality, sexuality, and technology. It is the absolutism of apocalyptic thought—not an impending apocalypse—that poses the more serious threat to our society, Quinby maintains. Millennial Seduction advocates a form of skepticism that challenges absolutism and encourages democratic participation.
