This humorous take on marriage shows you how the true keys to marital bliss and success are—surprisingly—the same as the cardinal rules of comedy. In love, as in comedy, timing is everything. One bad night doesn’t mean it’s time to quit. Have patience: great marriages, like a successful comedy career, take time. Turns out the cardinal rules of comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the “rules” of building a strong marriage. With humor and grace, Dani Klein Modisett shares a map for navigating your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and even nights when you bomb. Take My Spouse, Please shows how thirteen tried-and-true rules of comedy, when applied to marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other, and getting through tough times. Along with anecdotes from well-known comedians, comedy writers, marriage counselors, and long-term spouses, Dani delivers the core premise: humor matters.

Quinton’s story Tina Jackson ends up living in New Orleans with Quinton Lawson and his daughter. Her family back in Atlanta thinks she has been kidnapped because she didn’t show up for her wedding and her apartment looked as if it had been ransacked. Quinton is faced with a dilemma. He is in love with Tina and thinks she is in love with him but finds out she is confusing gratitude for love. He tries to fight his feelings for her, but it is a losing battle. Elston’s story Roxanne Keyes is a prime example of an ugly duckling turning into a swan. She has been deeply hurt by men in the past. And now with a body to die for all she does is use men. At one time Elston Baker was considered the essence of tall and handsome. After an accident, his wife cleans out their joint bank accounts and divorces him. Those incidents caused him to become a very angry and bitter man, especially towards women. Quincy’s story Sharon James goes against her father’s wishes and gets into a world of trouble. A month later he kicks her out of his house and life when he finds out she is pregnant. Quincy Lawson has seen his brother and best friend fall in love in the midst of unusual circumstances, get married, and have children. He feels as if he is missing out on something. He desperately wants the feeling of fatherhood.

I now deeply know that I am not just Fran - female, Dutch immigrant, Christian, wife, mother, and grandmother. I am still Fran, but now I see myself as a person, a global citizen whose everyday life has opportunities to be a part of making this world a place of flourishing. I am still even Fenny, connected to my Opoe and my ancestral roots and extended family on both sides of the ocean. I am still female, raised in a patriarchal culture, trying to live more fully as an egalitarian while holding my complementarian residue with understanding, respect, and a recognition that while you can learn and embrace new ideas, it takes a while for the body, habits, and emotions to adapt. I am fully Canadian, and I am actively participating in a diverse, multicultural, multi-ethnic, democratic nation that is, hopefully, beginning to deal with its settler colonial history. I am still Christian, though my understanding of what that looks like has, as it should, matured considerably. And I’m still a wife, mother, and grandmother. These labels help define me and give me place and context. Mostly, I’m an image bearer of God, a vessel through which the love and truth of Jesus can flow freely.

In The Wedding Complex Elizabeth Freeman explores the significance of the wedding ceremony by asking what the wedding becomes when you separate it from the idea of marriage. Freeman finds that weddings—as performances, fantasies, and rituals of transformation—are sites for imagining and enacting forms of social intimacy other than monogamous heterosexuality. Looking at the history of Anglo-American weddings and their depictions in American literature and popular culture from the antebellum era to the present, she reveals the cluster of queer desires at the heart of the "wedding complex"—longings not for marriage necessarily but for public forms of attachment, ceremony, pageantry, and celebration. Freeman draws on queer theory and social history to focus on a range of texts where weddings do not necessarily lead to legal marriage but instead reflect yearnings for intimate arrangements other than long-term, state-sanctioned, domestic couplehood. Beginning with a look at the debates over gay marriage, she proceeds to consider literary works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Vladimir Nabokov, and Edgar Allan Poe, along with such Hollywood films as Father of the Bride, The Graduate, and The Godfather. She also discusses less well-known texts such as Su Friedrich’s experimental film First Comes Love and the off-Broadway, interactive dinner play Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding. Offering bold new ways to imagine attachment and belonging, and the public performance and recognition of social intimacy, The Wedding Complex is a major contribution to American studies, queer theory, and cultural studies.
