As the quest to be the best is the main principle of evolution, Indian enterprises should strive to improve continuously. Indians have to assimilate and adapt the best practices followed elsewhere in the world. This is possible only if employees, employers and leaders strive to be the best. In this Tri series commentary on Successful Management Styles of India, Volume 1 deals with “What is the difference?”. The other two volumes cover “How to be the best” and “Beyond Sustainability.” Two policies and four principles are recommended in Vol. 1. The two policies are: offering the best quality of product/service and best price to the customer. The four principles are Transparency, Succession Planning, Empowerment and Compliance to Rulebooks. The main objective of this book is to help students of business management, who have to face challenges and ground realities different from what they learnt in text books. Businessmen, who want to start new ventures in India, also need to know what works in India and what does not. This book is recommended for both these groups.

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Teesside (Teesside Business School), course: International Management Styles, language: English, abstract: Since the liberalisation of India many international players have entered the Indian market either on joint ventures with some Indian companies or independently. India has emerged as a major participant in the global market. For example, in the field of information technology it has become an important force in the world. Given this kind of development, management researchers in the recent past have also started showing interest in the Indian business environment and in finding out effective ways of doing business as well as managing people in their Indian operations. They have realised that many of the management practices and managerial styles as applied in the west can not be transplanted exactly in the same manner in the Indian context. The role of culture as it relates to norms, values and behaviour patterns has become increasingly important in the field of management issues. There is considerable evidence (e.g. of Hofstede and Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner) that people of different regions hold different work-related values. Such knowledge is important for international as well as national companies. Norms and values create assumptions and expectations. If they are not the same for people working together, troubles may arise. Such mismatches of perception are of special interest in the field of leadership, particularly regarding the relationship between leaders and subordinates. The ability to understand and interpret such situations is the basic prerequisite for being able to behave and communicate in an effective manner. After giving basic social-demographic features about the country, this paper examines the impact of culture on the style and process of management and leadership in India. The characteristics of the Indian culture are identified, analysed and interpreted. Culture is described from the general to the specific. Starting with national culture, the cultural dimensions of India are appraised using the models of Hofstede, Trompenaars/Hamden-Turner, Hall, Lewis and Fukuyama, moving on to the business culture and then family culture. The second part of the paper defines and discusses the different leadership styles and their effectiveness in the Indian environment in order to reach a conclusion as to how managers should actually do their job.

Who are Made-in-India managers? What do they do differently? Over the last fifty years, several Indians have occupied top positions in multinationals across the globe. Shantanu Narayen at Adobe, Satya Nadella at Microsoft, Padmasree Warrier at NIO and Sundar Pichai at Google- there are, today, innumerable instances of CEOs born and bred in India, helming S&P?s 500 companies. What accounts for such a prominent presence of Indian professionals across the world today? In The Made-in-India Manager, two stalwarts of Indian business and academics examine this little-studied phenomenon and present a compelling argument: that a unique combination of factors has led Indian management thought and practices to become a `soft power? with the potential to decisively impact global managers of tomorrow. Drawing on their long and varied experience among corporates, the authors explore: ? the deep cultural influences that engender a sharp competitive instinct and an astute business perspective; ? the circumstances that inspire a high degree of resourcefulness in challenging situations; ? the ability to `think in English and act in Indian?, which enables flexible functioning in multicultural work environments; ? and, importantly, how today?s young managers can build on these advantages and bring to the table their own generational learning, attitudes and capabilities to ensure future success. Thought-provoking and provocative, this fascinating treatise takes a long view of the Indian professional?s path to definitive career success, and makes for compulsory reading for every management practitioner.

Indian scriptures are the treasure hove of philosophy—the philosophy of work and life. They offer vital guidelines on Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Social Psychology, Human Behavior and Modern-day Management concepts. Ancient Indian scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and some parts of Mahabharata are included in the book for HRM topics such as self-management, ethics, values, work potential, motivation, leadership, boss management, stress management and interpersonal relationships, etc. The study used quantitative methodology and collected data from 273 participants working in ten Indian companies. The statistical results have been included in the book only briefly to retain flow and fluency of thought for the reader. The work addresses the vital HR management issues in a culturally sensitive approach that is thoroughly based on Indian scriptural advices. The study proposes to plug the gaps in existing management knowledge that is lopsidedly based on the Western management research and theories. Resultantly, Arjuna Syndrome Model and Krishna Cure Model are presented. These models plug in the gaps in existing literature in the HRM and advance theory by suggesting novel ways of managing emotions, motivation, leadership, interpersonal relationships, recruitment and work potential at workplace.
