Dorothy L. Sayers's Christian faith was firmly founded upon the creedal teachings of High Church Anglicanism. Her consistent emphasis on the importance of dogma reflected her desire to engage with a faith that was both intellectually rigorous and also "made sense of the universe" in which she lived. In this regard, she steadfastly rejected the emotional attraction of Christianity which had brought comfort to many others. Temperamentally unsuited to respond positively to sentimental pietism of any sort, Sayers believed that such an appeal to emotion was a detrimental weakness which hindered genuine faith development. Accordingly, from her perspective, the only appropriate place for religious emotion in the life of faith was as a consequence of intellectual apprehension- and never as a precursor to the development of faith. A further key influence upon Sayers's spiritual formation was the thought of G.K. Chesterton. Indeed, Chesterton's writings were crucial in aiding Sayers to overcome her adolescent doubts and confusions; just as significantly, his works continued to influence her mature belief by offering a view of Christianity which was robust, not sentimental. Accordingly, it is evident that coming to terms with the complicated relationship between the intellect and religious emotion- which she described at one point as the "passionate intellect"- is critical to a proper apprehension of Sayers's understanding of Christian faith.
