Excerpt from Machinery for Metalliferous Mines: A Practical Treatise for Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Managers of Mines The continued favour awarded to the mining works of my father, the late Mr. D. C. Davies, F.G.S., coupled with the recent advances and improvements in mining machinery, has created a demand for a more comprehensive and detailed description of the Machinery used in Metalliferous Mines than was permissible in the few chapters devoted to that subject in my father's work on Metalliferous Mines and Mining, the Fifth Edition of which, revised and enlarged by myself, has recently been published. The present work, therefore, is designed as a companion volume to the former, and is devoted exclusively to the description of the various machines in daily successful use in mining, both for the extraction and transport of the ore, and for its concentration and preparation for the market. It does not deal with the occurrence of mineral lodes, nor does it attempt to exhaust the list of the numberless new processes and new patents which the fertile brains of inventors are almost daily bringing before the public, only too often to attract a brief attention and never to come into practical use.
