Children learn and discover the world through playing. How nice is it to have a ball: it can roll and bounce, one can throw it or play soccer. A ball helps the child to develop co-ordination and skill in body movement. Lucia has a red ball and loves to play with it. She puts it on the wall of the terrace and gives it a push. Something Lucia didnt expect happens: the ball bounces off the wall and assumes a life of its own. It bounces down the steps, becoming smaller and smaller. Because Lucia is a young child she cant run after her toy, and thus experiences a feeling of loss. On the steps of the stairs are different animals: a small snake, a cat, and a dog. Looking at the illustrations the young reader gets an understanding of how animals behave. They simply cant catch the ball, so it ends up on the waves of the ocean. Even the colourful fish cant do anything to help. Luckily, Lucias father is out on the water on his boat. He has a net to catch the ball and returns the favourite toy to his daughter. Because Lucia has gone through a range of emotions throughout the story, she is able to think of how she can avoid a similar experience in the future.

Lucia has a disturbed childhood. Unloved, she lives a life devoid of care and affection and is unable to express herself or communicate in any way with her family. But one day everything changes when Lucia finds an outlet and a way to communicate real emotion through her poltergeist, “Ginger”. Set in North London in 1989, sixteen year old Lucia comes home from school one day to discover a patch of water on her exercise paper. Noticing the reaction it gets from her mother, Lucia starts a game pouring water on carpets and beds. When psychics confirm there is malignant energy in the flat, her behaviour escalates. Before long, she is throwing heavy furniture around the flat and writing all over the walls. Before she knows it, she is appearing on national TV to convince the public of the poltergeist... Lucia does not understand why she is doing these things, but once she starts, she cannot stop. Why can’t she stop and what makes her do these things? Does she ever get found out. And more important, does Lucia fake the poltergeist or is Ginger real and part of her? Written from both a first person and third person perspective and with dual time narratives, Lucia’s Poltergeist is an unusual psychological suspense novel that explores themes of the supernatural, the psychological impact of abuse, and the issue of polarity and duality, the Jekyll and Hyde, within us all.

A GLOBE & MAIL RECOMMENDED SUMMER 2021 READ She is about thirty-three, speaks French fluently. . .[she ] is gay, sweet and ironic, but she has bursts of anger over nothing when she is confined to a straightjacket, writes James Joyce in one of the few surviving documents concerning his daughter. A gifted dancer, Beckett’s lover, an aspiring writer—what little we know about Lucia Joyce effectively ends with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and subsequent hospitalization: after her death, her nephew Stephen, executor of the Joyce estate, burned her letters and medical records, erasing her not only from her father’s legacy, but from her own existence in the world as well. To tell the story of a life redacted, Alex Pheby assumes not Lucia Joyce’s lost voice, but the perspectives of the men around her, layering a series of narratives about those on the edges of her life to create a portrait of the lost woman in silhouette. As much a critique of male violence and the long history of misogyny in women’s health, an in-absentia illustration of the fate of inconvenient women as the story of a single life, Lucia is an ethical and empathetic creative act and a moving in memoriam to a woman whose experiences we can only imagine.
